SECTION 1

It is summer vacation, and you’re home for the day.

Your parents are at work, and your big sister has
gone down the street in order to check on the
neighbor’s dog. For an hour, you’ve got nothing to

e
do. You figure you have time to do one fun thing
before your sister comes back. You can explore the

fil
upstairs attic, with all the old toys and boxes – or
you can head into the back yard and go over to an
old farmhouse. People say that the farmhouse is
haunted by elves.

SECTION 2

You head into the attic, climbing up the squeaky,

dusty stairs. At the top of the stairs is a door with an
elaborate brass handle. Reaching out, you try to
open it – it’s locked. After you wiggle the handle

e
for a moment, you head back downstairs. As you
reach the bottom of the stairs, your memory lights

fil
up and you remember where your mother stores the
spare keys.

Your mother is a very practical woman, and keeps

e
all the spare keys in one place. Since it is kind of a
pl
big house, there are a good dozen keys that go to
various locks and doors around the house and yard.
You head down to the kitchen, knowing exactly
m

where to find the key to this mysterious attic door.

Your mother keeps an old teapot on the counter,

Sa

filled with all the various knick-knacks that she

could need. Sure enough –rummaging inside, there
is a key ring with a dozen keys on it. Grabbing the
key ring, you head back upstairs, towards the locked
door. As you start climbing the stairs again, you
find the correct key, which has a piece of tape on it:
‘Attic’.
Sliding the key into the lock, you hold your breath
and try to open the door. With a ‘click’, the door
slowly opens, unveiling a room full of boxes and
crates. Excited, you begin to look around. On top of
one box nearby is an old leather journal. Heading
over to it, you see that it is titled ‘Diary’. Hanging

e
from a mirror next to it is a shiny pearl necklace. At

fil
the end of the necklace is a large emerald shaped
like a teardrop.

SECTION 3

You pick up the old leather journal and brush the

dust off the cover. The title says ‘Diary’, but it
doesn’t say whose diary it is. Curious, you open it
and begin to take a look. The handwriting is

e
elaborate, and the title page has your mother’s
name. When you look at the date on the first journal

fil
entry, is says ‘January 1, 2000’. After a quick
glance at the first few pages, you skip into the
middle of the journal. At the top of the page is a
sketch of a little man in a cage, drawn in blue ink.
e
There is a poem underneath the picture, titled ‘The
pl
Bird Woman’. Squinting in the darkness of the attic,
you begin to read the poem out loud, reciting the
words carefully. Just then, the downstairs door
m

bangs shut.

Do you hide the journal and get out of the attic as

SECTION 4

You slide open a nearby drawer and quickly throw

the journal into it, hoping that your sister is not
going to notice that you have been in the attic.
Quietly closing the attic door behind you, you sneak

e
downstairs into the living room and settle onto the
couch, pretending that you never left.

fil
Your sister comes into the room: “Hey, guess what?
Mom’s holding a garage sale – we’re going to clear
out the attic today. Help me start putting stuff into
e
boxes, and we’ll take everything to the flea market.
pl
If we’re lucky, she’ll let us buy some peanuts and
cotton candy while we’re there.”
m

What a shock. Now you’ll never get a chance to

read the rest of the journal.
