Audio - In Simple Words

What is Audio?

Audio refers to sound. In computers, audio is used in multimedia, games, videos, and animations to

make things more interesting and realistic.

Applications of Audio in Computer Graphics:

- Background music in animations or games

- Sound effects (like clicks, crashes, etc.)

- Voiceovers for characters

- Enhances user experience

Audio Hardware in Computers:

- Microphones - for recording sound

- Speakers/Headphones - for listening

- Sound Card - processes sound input and output

- MIDI Keyboard - for composing music

- Synthesizers - for generating electronic sound

Audio Capturing:

- Uses a sound digitizer to capture sound from mic, cassette, CD, etc.

- Converts analog audio into digital form

- Stored on computer and played using speakers

Audio Editing:

Editing audio helps to:


1. Remove unwanted parts

2. Adjust length of audio

3. Improve sound quality

4. Fix mistakes

5. Add effects

Editing Tools:

Adobe Audition, Cool Edit, MP3 DirectCut, Soundforge, WavePad

Common Editing Operations:

- Trimming - remove silent parts

- Splicing - remove unwanted sound

- Amplifying - increase volume

- Fading - gradually lower sound

- Stretching - change speed

- Equalizing - balance tones

- Resampling - improve file size/quality

MIDI (Musical Instrument Digital Interface):

- A standard used to record and play back music using digital instruments

- Stores only musical notes, not actual sound

- MIDI files are small and easy to edit

Advantages of MIDI:

- Easy to edit

- Low file size

- Needs less processing power


Limitations of MIDI:

- Doesn't record human voice

- Playback quality depends on device

MIDI Components:

- Synthesizer - creates sound

- Sequencer - software to record/edit music

- Track - stores recordings

- Channel - splits data

- Pitch - musical note

- Timbre - type of sound (flute, drum, etc.)

- Voice - a single sound

- Patch - sound setting

MIDI Ports:

1. MIDI In - receives data

2. MIDI Out - sends data

3. MIDI Thru - passes data to next device

Used to connect MIDI devices like keyboards and sound cards.
