If you would like to improve your English, one thing you can do is to build up your vocabulary. In order to
do this, you have to practice a lot. I'm afraid there is not a short cut for this. But there are many effective ways.
First of all, you should read a lot. You can read short stories, comics, newspapers, magazines, etc. depending on

Over the past 600 years, English has grown from a language of a few speakers to become the dominant language
of international communication. English as we know it today emerged (nổi lên, hiện ra) around 1350, after having
incorporated (kết hợp) many elements of French that were introduced following the Norman invasion of 1066. Until
the 1600s, English was, for the most part, spoken only in England and had not extended even as far as Wales,

and grew in various parts of the world. As these communities proliferated (sinh sôi, nảy nở, tăng nhanh), English
gradually became the primary language of international business, banking and diplomacy (ngoại giao).
Currently, about 80 percent of the information stored on computer systems worldwide is English. Two- thirds of
the world’s science writing is in English, and English is the main language of technology, advertising, media,

amount of water people use and the waste people produce and throw away. What can be done to stop this pollution?

products to be used over and over again. Recycling can also reduce the number of trees cut down to produce paper
products. “It” takes very little effort. It is not hard to place plastic and

in the home. It can be conserved by taking short showers instead of baths, repairing leaky faucets, using the
dishwasher or washing machine only when fully loaded, or simply turning the faucet off while brushing your teeth.
Third, we need to reduce waste. We need to recycle whenever possible, but should also try to use this waste
effectively. For example, grass clippings and food scraps can be made into compost for plants. The average person

One of the most important discoveries of the nineteenth century was a method of using natural gas for cooking and
heating. Large amounts of natural gas are found in the United States, usually several feet below the surface of the
Earth. Natural gas is most often found in places where petroleum, the oil from which gasoline is made, is found. Often
the natural gas must be removed before the oil itself can be reached.
For many years after natural gas was first discovered, it was thought to have no value. Finally, however, people began
to understand its use and to find ways of storing it and moving it from place to place. Today natural gas is stored in
large tanks and used for lighting, cooking and heating. It has also been used for electric generators and hybrid cars (xe
lai, 1 dong co chay bang xăng, 1 dong co chay bang mô tơ) recently. In many ways natural gas is one of our finest

The changing roles of the modern father
Fathers used to act as the ‘breadwinner' of their family, and as the teacher of moral and religious values. Today,
however, those roles are gradually changing.
Changes in economic roles
More and more women are going out to work and earn money. This increases the budget of the family. Apart from
that, there are various social welfare programmes which financially assist mothers in supporting their children. Both
these changes have greatly impacted the role of fathers because they make paternal financial support less essential for
many families.
Changes in caregiving roles
With the burden of financial support reduced, and with a changing concept of a father's role, modern day fathers tend
to be more involved in children's caregiving. They are now spending more time and energy on their children.
Psychological research across families from all ethnic backgrounds suggests that the influence of a father's love and
attention is as great as that of a mother's. Fatherly love helps children develop a sense of their place in the world,
which helps their social and emotional development. Moreover, children who receive more love from their fathers are
less likely to have behavioural problems.

Have you ever noticed advertisements which says “Learn a foreign language in 6 weeks, or your money back.
From the first day your pronunciation will be excellent. Just send…” and so on? Of course, it never happens quite
like that. One’s mother language is easier to learn, but it also requires a lot of practice to be fluent. And think how
much practice that gets! Before the Second World War, people usually learned a foreign language in order to read
the literature of the country.
Now speaking a foreign language is what most people want. Every year millions of people start learning one.

will take a long time, like learning a foreign language at school. A few people try to learn a language fast by studying
for 6 or more hours a day. It is clearly easier to learn the language in the country where it is spoken. However, most
people cannot afford this, and for many it is not necessary. They need the language in order to do their work better.

People invent things to enhance their lives. Today, inventions are mostly improvements of previous
inventions. With technology, inventions are taking a shorter and shorter time to complete.
One such invention is the camera. The time taken to invent the camera in the sixteenth century was prolonged
due to the lack of technology and scientific knowledge. When inventors first tried to take a photograph in 1558, the
image could not stay on the paper permanently. It was only in 1837 that inventors managed to produce pictures that
did not fade away.
With the invention of the camera, further improvements were made and the first underwater camera was
invented in 1856. It was placed in a tightly sealed container. However, when the contraption was underwater, the
container broke before many pictures were taken. It was only in the 1980s that a camera was made to be able to go
deep underwater without being damaged. Less than twenty years later, technology allowed underwater cameras to take
photographs in color and to go even deeper into the water. The cameras even looked like a fish.

Hurricane Katrina was the third strongest hurricane ever to hit the U. S. It affected 90,000 square miles in Louisiana,
Mississippi, Florida, and Alabama.

tip of Florida. It got stronger as it traveled across the Gulf of Mexico. It made its second landfall off the coast of

coast. Residents were told to expect power outages. They were told they might lose their rooftops and to expect water
shortages. The National Hurricane Director was very concerned. He personally called the governors of Louisiana and
Mississippi. He even called President Bush at his ranch in Texas. He spoke directly with New Orleans mayor Ray
Nagin. Nagin issued an evacuation order for his city. Most people left. About eighty percent of the population
evacuated. The estimate was that around 100,000 people remained in

Located in the limestone mountains of Phong Nha - Ke Bang National Park, Son Doong Cave was first
found in 1991 by Ho Khanh, a local man. In 2009, the cave was explored and published by a group of scientists from
British Cave Research Association.
Son Doong Cave was formed from 2 to 5 million years ago, when river flowed through the limestone
mountain area and was buried (bị vùi lấp). The water eroded limestone and created an underground tunnel. In soft
limestone areas, the collapse of tunnel ceiling formed large holes which became giant domes afterward. The cave is

The search for alternative sources of energy has led in various directions. Many communities are burning
garbage and other biological waste products to produce electricity. Converting waste products to gases or oil is
also an efficient way to dispose of wastes.
Experimental work is being done to derive synthetic fuels from coal, oil shale and coal tars. But to date, that
process has proven expensive. Other experiments are underway to harness power with giant windmills.
Geothermal power, heat from the earth, is also being tested.
Some experts expect utility companies to revive hydroelectric power derived from streams and rivers. Fifty
years ago, hydroelectric power provided one third of the electricity used in the US, but today it supplies only 4
percent. The oceans are another potential source of energy. Scientists are studying ways to convert the energy of

Fathers used to act as the ‘breadwinner' of their family, and as the teacher of moral and religious values. Today,
however, those roles are gradually changing.
Changes in economic roles
54
More and more women are going out to work and earn money. This increases the budget of the family. Apart from
that, there are various social welfare (phúc lợi xh)programmes which financially assist mothers in supporting their
children. Both these changes have greatly impacted the role of fathers because they make paternal financial support

If you would like to improve your English, one thing you can do is to build up your vocabulary. In order to
do this, you have to practice a lot. I'm afraid there is not a short cut for this. But there are many effective ways.
First of all, you should read a lot. You can read short stories, comics, newspapers, magazines, etc. depending on
your English level. As you read, you can try to guess the meanings of unknown words from the context of the
sentence. If you cannot, then look up the definition in a dictionary. English to English dictionary should be your
first choice and keep the translator as last. Another way of building vocabulary is to watch movies in English
which will also help with pronunciation. Try to be involved with the language as much as you can. Keep a
vocabulary notebook and write down a few words each day. Keep in mind that you have to revise them regularly.
In my opinion, to communicate with people all you need is words. Even if you just say the words one after
another, people most likely will understand what you mean regardless of the order of the words and grammar.

Have you ever had a dream about traveling to another planet in our solar system? If you have, there is an actual
programme that is happening right now, and it hopes to send people to Mars in 2023. Known as the Mars One
Mission, it will send a crew of four people on a one-way mission to colonize Mars. Those chosen people will have to

Before the Second World War, people usually learned a foreign language in order to read the
literature of the country.
Now speaking a foreign language is what most people want. Every year millions of people start learning one.
How they do it? Some people try it at home, with books and records of tapes; some use radio or television programs;
some use computers and network; others go to evening classes. If they use the language only 2 or 3 times a week, it
will take a long time, like learning a foreign language at school. A few people try to learn a the language fast by
studying for 6 or more hours a day. It is clearly easier to learn the language in the country where it is spoken.
However, most people cannot afford this, and for many it is not necessary. They need the language in order to do their
work better. For example, scientists and doctors chiefly need to be able to read books and reports in the foreign
language. Whether the language is learned quickly or slowly, it is hard work. Machines and good books will help, but
they cannot do the students’ work for him.

organized and able to keep a sensible schedule. They also learn to cope with the job stress apart from the stress
of the schoolwork. Some of the most stressful jobs include teaching, nursing, and police work. These skills help
prepare teenagers for their later careers. High school students who work are more likely to succeed as adults than
people who enter the job market at a later age with no work experience.
Teenagers want a lot of expensive things: clothes, mp3 players, trips with their friends, etc.

If you'd like to improve your English, one thing you can do is to build up your vocabulary. In order to do this,
you have to practice a lot. I'm afraid there is not a short cut for this. But there are many effective ways. First of all,
you should read a lot. You can read short stories, comics, newspapers, magazines, etc. Depending on your English
level. As you read, you can try to guess the meanings of unknown words from the context of the sentence. If you
cannot, then look up the definition in a dictionary. English to English dictionary should be your first choice and keen
the translator as last. Another way of building vocabulary is to watch movies in English which will also help with
pronunciation. Try to be involved with the language as much as you can. Keep a vocabulary notebook and write down
a few words each day. Keep in mind that you have to revise them regularly. In my opinion, to communicate with
people all you need is words. Even if you just say the words one after another, people most likely will understand
what you mean regardless of the order of the words and grammar.

There is growing evidence that urbanization has a sharp impact on climate, causing changes that can wreak havoc on
precipitation patterns that supply the precious resource of water. The heavy amounts of heat and pollution rising from
cities both delay and stimulate the fall of precipitation, depriving some areas of rain while drenching others.
Cities are on average one to ten degrees warmer than the surrounding undeveloped areas. Cities also produce large
amounts of pollutants called aerosols, gaseous suspensions of dust particles or byproducts from the burning of fossil
fuels. Both heat and pollutants change the dynamics of clouds. When hoisted up in the sky,
76
the microscopic particles act as multiple surfaces on which the moisture in clouds can condense as tiny droplets. This
can prevent or delay the formation of larger raindrops that fall more easily from the sky, or it can cause the rain to fall
in another location.
In California, pollution blows eastward and causes a precipitation shortage of around one trillion gallons a year across
the Sierra Nevada mountain range. By contrast, in very humid cities, such as Houston, heat and pollutants seem to
invigorate summer storm activity by allowing clouds to build higher and fuller before releasing torrential rains.

Sheila, aged 59, says, "I join to see what my grandchildren are doing, as my daughter posts videos and photos of them.
It's a much better way to see what they're doing than waiting for letters and photos in the post."
Ironically, Sheila's grandchildren are less likely to use Facebook themselves. Children under 17 in the UK are
leaving it - only 2.2 million users are under 17 - but they're not going far from their smartphones. Chloe, aged 15, even
sleeps with her phone. "It's my alarm clock so I have to," she says. "I look at it before I go to sleep and as soon as I
wake up."
Unlike her grandmother's generation, Chloe's age group is spending so much time on their phones at home that
they are missing out on spending time with their friends in real life. Sheila, on the other hand, has made contact with
old friends from school she hasn't heard from in forty years. "We use Facebook to arrange to meet all over the
country," she says. "It's changed my social life completely.”
Peter, 38 and father of two teenagers, reports that he used to be on his phone or laptop constantly. “I was always
connected and I felt like I was always working," he says. "How could I tell my kids to get off their phones if I was
always in front of a screen myself?" So, in the evenings and at weekends, he takes his sim card out of his smartphone
and puts it into an old-style mobile phone that can only make calls and send text messages. "I'm not completely cut off
from the world in case of emergencies, but the important thing is I'm setting a good example to my kids and spending
more quality time with them"
