Gerunds and Participles

1. Gerund:

A gerund is the -ing form of a verb that functions as a noun.

Examples:

- Swimming is my favorite hobby. (Subject)

- I enjoy reading. (Object)

Forming Gerunds:

- play -> playing, read -> reading

- make -> making, drive -> driving

- run -> running, sit -> sitting

- die -> dying, lie -> lying

Uses of Gerunds:

- Subject: Jogging keeps me fit.

- Object: She enjoys reading novels.

- After prepositions: He is good at singing.

- After certain verbs: I suggest going to the beach.

2. Participle:

A participle is a verb form that functions as an adjective.

Present Participle: (-ing form)

Examples:

- The singing bird flew away.

- She is the running champion.

Past Participle: (-ed or irregular form)

Examples:

- The broken window needs repair.


- The written report was submitted.

Uses of Participles:

- As adjective: The broken chair needs fixing.

- In participle clauses: Having finished my homework, I went to bed.
