1. Start by saying what the photo shows in general.

2. Talk about what you can see in more detail.

USEFUL VOCABULARY

in the middle a photograph

in the centre a painting
at the top a drawing
at the bottom an advertisement
on the left (side) a poster
on the right (side) the cover of a book
in the background a map
in the foreground a scene from a film

USEFUL SENTENCES

• This picture is….. a painting, a map... / it's an advertisement for... / it was

drawn by...

• The scene takes place in the street, at school.... / during the day, at night, in
the evening.../it shows…

• there is, there are, we can see...

OPINIONS

• I think that.. , maybe..., I suppose... , perhaps, probably, it might be…, it seems

GRAMMAR

• Use the PRESENT CONTINUOUS to describe what people are doing.

Here is an example:

The photo shows a row of old detached houses in a city. In the foreground there is a
man with a big rucksack. He’s wearing a blue shirt and a pair of jeans; he is walking
along a river, he looks like a typical tourist, he is holding a map, he probably doesn’t
know the city.
It might be somewhere in Europe, perhaps Northern Europe because of the style of
the houses; in the background there is a towerbell, it might be the cathedral of the
city. There are some trees along the river; it seems quite attractive.
