Important Notices
Hardware Compatibility
AVEVA PRO/II Simulation is developed with Intel Fortran. All tests are performed on Intel Processor machines
and not on with machines with other processors. Occasionally there may be hardware configuration specific
issues that may not pass our strict certification process.

Compatibility with PRO/II versions

PRO/II 9.0x, 9.1x, 9.2x, 9.3x, 9.4x, 10.0x, 10.1x, 10.2x, 2020.x, 2021.x, 2022.x, and 2023.x database files will
automatically be converted into AVEVA PRO/II Simulation 2024 files as they are opened. The original file will be
saved using an alternate file name. Previous versions are considered obsolete and may or may not fully convert.

Important notices for AVEVA PRO/II Simulation 2024

1. Notepad++ installer is no longer shipped with PRO/II installer. Users are recommended to get the installer
from the Notepad++ website and install before proceeding with PRO/II installation.
2. AVEVA Help: AVEVA PRO/II Simulation has adopted a new format of web help for documentation.
The new AVEVA Help uses a consolidated product documentation utility that installs and registers as a self-
contained service on your computer. This allows you to securely view multiple, dynamic AVEVA web help
installations on your local machine through your web browser.
Important: Correct viewing requires Google Chrome or Microsoft Edge as the default browser.
3. PRO/II Electrolytes MSE (511) license is no longer required to run OLI MSE simulation file.
4. Solid Reacting components in Equilibrium Reactor (Bug # 254673). A 100 percent conversion was not
achieved when there were solid components present and the user selected vapor phase in reactor operation
phase. After fixing the issue there is 100% conversion achieved when there are solid components present.
5. Plug Flow Reactor (Bug # 2540125). The residence time was reported as average value for each profile point.
It is now calculated at each profile point, so the existing results will change.
6. Pressure unit of measure (UOM) is now supported for Reid Vapor Pressure (RVP). The default UOM for RVP
are psi irrespective of the global pressure UOM. The stream property tables is an exception to this and will
use the simulation’s global UOM. In order to select/change the RVP UOM in stream property table for earlier
version PRZs during migration, re-create the SPT by adding same parameters.
7. YEAR unit of measure (UOM) changes (Bug # 2371084)
Issue: Inconsistency in stream total fluid rate between PRO/II input (.INP) file and user interface. New UOMs
created after AVEVA PRO/II Simulation version v2022 were added with Year as UOM and used 365 days as
conversion whereas the other UOMs created prior to PRO/II V2022 used 365.25 days per year conversion.
This issue is now fixed in v2023.1 and v2024 and all the UOMs use 365.25 days as the conversion factor.
However, simulation files created in PRO/II v2022/v2023 and migrated by schema will have slightly different
values in the database for Year UOM, if the simulation file was created in an earlier version. At that time, the
Year was converted to internal units using factor 365 and now, we are converting with 365.25 to get the
original value. This can cause some small discrepancies. No issues for migration by input.

AVEVA™ PRO/II™ Simulation Release Notes
Important: Read First

8. OLI Co-existence: Due to bug#2527582 fix, when v2023.2 is installed on top of v2022, the base install of
v2023 modifies the registration of the OLIAdaptorExe for v2022 and it may not work as expected. Repair
v2022 install to correct this.
9. Added support for Ionic Strength changes for OLI66 (Bug # 2254795)
Issue: Molal ionic strength calculated by OLI 66 methods is wrongly reported as molar ionic strength in
stream property table. This is now fixed.
Impact on file migrated from older versions:
• Stream property table (SPT) for streams using OLI66 will show n/a for ionic strength. To resolve this,
delete the existing SPT and recreate new SPT with correct ionic strengths.
• Files with ionic strength as specification may not converge. After migration, update the specification to
the correct molal ionic strength parameter to converge.
10. License related dlls are now added to the PROII2024\Bin folder instead of C:\Program Files\Common
Files\SimSci\Licensing20.
Only latest FNP license including token (11.16), ALS and LaaS licenses are supported in v2024 by default. We
suggest upgrade to FNP 11.16.2 or another security option wherever possible. To use older versions of FNP,
user should manually copy the required dlls to the PROII2024\Bin and SIM4MEPortal43\Bin directories and
edit appropriately the proii.ini and SIM4MEPortal.ini files.
11. Pipe: The Nominal Pipe Size (NPS) values are supported only in inches in GUI side for both Single and
Multiple pipe devices.
12. When extended binary interaction parameter set is mixed with two parameters set in Wilson thermo
method, v2023 results are wrong. This is corrected in v2023.2 and v2024 (Bug 2918251).
13. The following components properties are updated in SIMSCI data bank.
a. Liquid Enthalpy correlation data for 124MBENZ,135MBENZ, m-Xylene
b. TC,PC,ZC,VC for N2O4
c. Vapor pressure and Liquid Thermal Conductivity correlation T-max for Dowtherm G
d. Vapor Pressure Correlation data for Hydrogen Fluoride
e. Heat of formation data for Linoleic Acid, Oleic Acid.

Important notices for AVEVA PRO/II Simulation 2023

1. Economics Unit - CapEx unit tested during alpha testing is renamed as Economics unit for release.

Important notices for AVEVA PRO/II Simulation 2022

1. Refinery Reactors need separate licenses to run.

Important notices for AVEVA PRO/II Simulation 2021

1. AVEVA PRO/II Simulation 2021 is a 64-bit only release. Update the custom UASLB and UAUOP dlls to 64-bit to
use with this release.

2. Compilers are migrated to Visual Studio 2019.x and Intel Visual Fortran 2020.x. Update the UASLB and
UAUOP binaries to compatible compilers. From this release, only VS2019 UAS solution files are included in
Applib folder, i.e. older versions of solution and project files are not included.
3. In line with Microsoft’s end of extended support, support for Windows 7 and 2013 Server are removed.
4. UAS and PDTS Components are removed from custom installation and are always installed. No need to use
UAS and PDTS with ADDLOCAL option in silent installation.
5. In earlier versions, PRO/II installer adds full user access to PROII\Bin folder to allow users to update
UASLB.dll. Because of security concern, from this release, PRO/II installer will not update the system
permissions of these folder. Users must work with their IT to set this permission if needed.
6. Support for REFPROP 10.0 is added. As earlier only one version of REFPROP Addon can exist in the machine,
i.e. REFPROP Addon 9.0, 9.1 and 10.0 cannot co-exist. Users must install appropriate version of addon to use
with PRO/II. In addition, 9.0, 9.1 and 10.0 addon uses different INI file entries for configuration. Users must
correct these INI entries manually to use with different versions of AVEVA PRO/II Simulation. Refer to the
Getting Started Guide or Silent Install Guide for documentation on REFPROP Addon installation.
7. Users now can configure PRO/II to use ‘Microsoft Excel Trusted Locations’ to run Excel Unit Operations and
Calculator with macros.
8. 32-bit versions of AVEVA Assay 2020 and 2021 are not compatible with AVEVA PRO/II Simulation 2021. Use
64-bit versions of AVEVA Assay along with AVEVA PRO/II Simulation 2021.

Important notices for AVEVA PRO/II Simulation 2020

1. Taxonomy and Release policy changes:
• Product Name changed to ‘AVEVATM PRO/IITM Simulation’
• Version number format changed to release year-based format.
• AVEVATM PRO/IITM Simulation 2020 is available only in 64 bit. Users who still want 32 bit install because
of the dependency with custom UAS and UAUOP dlls have to contact support to get the 32 bit install.
2. Flexera recommends using FNP 11.16 and above to resolve a security vulnerability reported in earlier
versions.
3. Polymer and Batch Unit Operations are no longer supported. Simulation using Polymer and Batch Units will
continue to work but this is provided ‘as is’ with no development support.
4. Added support for Microsoft Excel 2019 and removed support Windows 7 Operating system and Microsoft
Excel 2010.
• In line with Microsoft's end of extended support, support for Windows 7 Operating system and Microsoft
Excel 2010 are removed.
5. Simulation file handling changes (PRZ files):
• PRO/II now locks the PRZ files on open and supports protecting access to sections of simulation. New
OpenDatabase2(dbname, Password, Read-Only) added for COM support.
6. 576097 - From PRO/II 9.4.1 SRKM binary interaction parameters for IC5 / NC5 / NC6 with water always use
Water correlation even when databank parameters were available. This is reverted in this release. So existing
results will change if these components are used in SRKM, SRKS and HEXAMER thermo. To get pre-2020
results, use the following interaction parameters using the defined BIPs.

Important notices from PRO/II 9.4

1. Users with FNP 11.12 server, need to change the security entry to Type=FNP1112 in proii.ini file manually or
using the Licensing Management Tool.
2. Users with Windows 8 or newer OS's, need to enable NET 3.5 install in the machine before installing PRO/II.
3. Flowsheet Migration
Preserving calculated values to initialize convergence:
Both file conversion by schema and file conversion by keywords will lose calculated values. Difficult to convert
simulations will have to start from user supplied initial estimates which will take longer, or may result in non-
convergence. To preserve the calculated values they have to be transferred to the input description. To do that it

Version 2024

AVEVA™ PRO/II™ Simulation Release Notes
Important: Read First

is first necessary to open the file in the original version, perform an Input/Update Estimates/All and Save prior to
conversion. If that version is not on the current computer you need to install it or do the update on another
computer that has that version.
Schema vs Keyword Migration:
"Use schema translation in the conversion process" will result in files being converted using the database
translation as done in versions prior to v9.4. Since UOM conversion factors have improved precision in v9.4 some
user entries in non-SI units may have changed values in the 6th significant figures which become noticeable
when round numbers are entered.
"Use the embedded keyword file in the conversion process" will result in PRO/II importing the backup keyword
file embedded in the .prz (available since v8.1). This tends to preserve rounded number entries. If the user
entered data in SI units which are the same as internally stored units, and entered more than 5 significant
figures, precision may be lost since older keyword files did not persist the full precision on export. This method
also cleans the database from potential memory issues carried from one version to the next. It is important in
keyword to update the estimates before migrating as mentioned above to initialize convergence.
1. Default standard conditions:
Default standard conditions are different in English and Metric or SI. This change may affect the molar rates or
volumetric specifications. When the standard conditions are default corresponding to the UOM set, if UOM set is
changed from English to Metric or SI owing to different standard conditions the standard vapor volume changes,
which may affect the molar rates or volumetric specifications. If the standard temperature or pressure is non-
default with calculate standard vapor volume checked on when UOM set is changed these conditions will be
honored and standard vapor volume will be calculated based on these conditions. If the standard temperature or
pressure is non-default with calculate standard vapor volume checked off when UOM set is changed then user
provided standard temperature, pressure and volume will be retained.
1. DIPPR 2015 will expire in 2026.
2. DIPPR 2015 has a coexisting issue with PRO/II 8.3 and older libraries. To make the earlier version work, the
user will need to unregister DIPPR 2015. There is a utility included with PRO/II 9.3 to unregister DIPPR 2015.

Important notices from PRO/II 9.3

1. DIPPR 2013 will expire in 2024.
2. DIPPR 2013 has coexisting issue with PRO/II 8.3 and older library. To make the earlier version work, the user
will need to unregistered DIPPR 2013.

Important notices from PRO/II 9.2

1. Starting with v9.0, USB keys only allow a single instance of PRO/II to be open at a time. This is intended. If
you need multiple instances of PRO/II open you need to have FlexNet security.
2. MS Office 64 bit is not supported. Various Excel features (such as Spreadsheet Tools) will likely not work.
3. MS Office 2013 is not supported.

Important notices from PRO/II 9.1

1. Uninstalling certain features of PRO/II (such as OLI, REFPROP and MSM) will not work from Add-Remove if
UAC (User Account Control) is turned on. You can still uninstall these using Setup, or, you can turn off UAC
temporarily if your work site lets you.

2. On some windows server machines give an 'OPCUA server failed to start' error. The error is reproducible in
the below configuration machine. Windows 2008 R2 comes with preinstalled .Net Framework 3.5.1. You
need to enable this feature from "Server Manager". i.e "You must use the role management tool to install or
configure MICROSOFT .NET FRAMEWORK 3.5". After enabling the .Net Framework 3.5.1 feature from Service
Manger install will go smoothly and OPCUA server also install without any issue.

Installation Notes
At the end of installation, it is recommended to restart the machine if a dialog pops up asking for Restart, with
YES/NO buttons.

Things to consider while installing and using REFPROP Addon

Users must be aware of the following limitations the REFPROP Addon has with respect to the standalone
REFPROP program from NIST:
1. Only the REFPROP fluids are supported. The list of supported fluids also varies with each method. The list of
supported fluids is shown in Appendix B of AVEVA Thermodynamics REFPROP Thermo Add-on Release Notes
found under \\Manual\User.
2. The fluid files must all be located in the same folder. The location is saved in the RefProp.ini file as part of the
Add-on install step.
3. Only three thermo methods are supported at this time: NIST23 (the default in REFPROP), GERG-2004 and
AGA-8. Other method variations or combinations available through the standalone REFPROP application are
not supported.
4. The AGA8 method is only valid for the vapor phase (this is a limitation of AGA8, not the Add-on).
5. Air cannot be mixed with other pure components to form a mixture. Air must be used as the only
"component" in the component slate.
6. Air is the only "pseudo pure fluid" supported at this time.
7. The predefined mixtures in REFPROP are not supported at this time.
8. Starting with PRO/II 9.0, PRO/II is able to call the REFPROP flash directly.
9. In the past users needed to obtain a license of REFPROP to be able to use the REFROP added method sets in
PRO/II. Users can now download and install the files by requesting them separately from PRO/II via the
AVEVA Electronic Software Distribution site.
AVEVA make NO EXPRESS OR IMPLIED WARRANTY AS TO ANY MATTER, INCLUDING NO WARRANTY OR

Constraints using AVEVA Excel Simulation Reports

The following is a List of Known Defects and Constraints in using AVEVA Excel Simulation Reports.
Q1) Sometimes it seems that the last item selected (during multiple selects) is missing after a "drag and drop"
operation. Why?
A) The observed behavior is a limitation in the current implementation. The "CONTROL" or "SHIFT" button needs
to be pressed until the drag-drop operation is completed. Also, two consecutive clicks unchecks the last item.
The user after performing a multiple drag and drop operation, should check if all the desired objects are

AVEVA™ PRO/II™ Simulation Release Notes
Important: Read First

highlighted in the Flowsheet Explorer. If not highlighted, it will be copied with the rest of the selected objects.
This happens most often when the user selects the last object once and then again clicks it to "drag and drop".
The second click unchecks the last item. The user is advised to select the last item and directly drag them all
without clicking again.
Q2) Can I search for a stream say "CRUDE" or a Unit Operation say "PREHEATER" on the Flowsheet Explorer?
A) Yes. In this case, go to streams and expand it. Now select "Streams" and type in the first few letters of the
string you want to search say "CRU". You will be navigated to the first match. The same applies for unit
operations. Note that you need to expand "Streams" or "UnitOps" to use the search functionality.
Q3) Why is it that I get "MISSING" values even when I clear the check-box "Show Missing Values" in Report
Manager settings?
A) The option "Excel Comparison Report" may be "ON". In this option, the software just looks at the entire list of
attributes and ignores the "Show Missing Values" check-box.
Q4) I have selected "Excel Comparison Report" but Columns are not being compared. Why?
A) Only unit operations that lend themselves to comparison are allowed in the "compare mode". For example,
streams, flashes, heat exchangers, pumps, expanders, compressors have unchanging formats and can be
compared side by side. Unit operations such as columns, reactors, controllers etc cannot be compared because
of variations in report formats for individual units.
Q5) Energy UOMs in the AVEVA PRO/II Simulation output report are reported as "MM Btu/hr" but the prefix
"MM" is not used in AVEVA Excel Simulation Reports application. Why?
A) The prefixes such as "MM" for millions when English units are selected, are not available. These prefixes may
be included at a later date.
Q6) I dragged and dropped an attribute to a specific row but it is added to the bottom. Why?
A) Location specific attribute addition is not supported in this version of AVEVA Excel Simulation Reports
application. It gets appended to the bottom of the Report pane only.
Q7) When I add/delete any attribute to a summary report, why does the name of the report change
automatically?
A) "Summary" and "Detailed" reports are standard, pre-configured reports. Once you start to customize these
reports, the saved name is changed to avoid overwriting these reports.
For example: If the user starts with a "Summary report" and then adds a unit operation, it is renamed as
"Summary ReportAdd1" to indicate that the report is based on the "Summary Report" with added objects.
Q8) Sometimes I do not see "Transport properties" or "Refinery Inspection Properties" in my Excel reports.
Why?
A) "Transport properties" and "Refinery properties" must be selected in the AVEVA PRO/II Simulation
thermodynamics set for these values to be available in AVEVA Excel Simulation Reports application.
Q9) Sometimes I do not see Tray Hydraulics data when I drag and drop them onto the reports. Why?
A) There are three options under "Perform Tray sizing Calculations". The first option "At output time" is the
default. In this case, AVEVA PRO/II Simulation software updates these data only when the text output report is
generated. If you generate AVEVA Excel Simulation Reports application before generating the text report, these
data will not be available. If you generate the text report first, these data will become available and will be
included in AVEVA Excel Simulation Reports application. You could also select either the second or third options
under "Perform Tray sizing Calculations" which will cause tray hydraulic calculations to be executed during the

AVEVA™ PRO/II™ Simulation Release Notes
Important: Read First

run operation, in which case the data will be available to AVEVA Excel Simulation Reports application before
creating a text report.
Q10) In AVEVA PRO/II Simulation output options, I have selected the option "Two reports, one in Input UOM,
one in Output UOM". However, I do not see both the UOM slates in my AVEVA Excel Simulation Reports
application. Why?
A) At present, only the AVEVA PRO/II Simulation output slate is supported in AVEVA Excel Simulation Reports
application. You can manually select the desired UOM slate under Report Settings/Current UOM Slate.
Q11) Why do not my reports save the UOM information? I opened "Summary" report and changed the UOM
slate to "SI". I closed and re-opened the flowsheet to see that the UOM slate has changed to AVEVA PRO/II
Simulation Output slate. Why?
A) The UOM slate settings provide an option to temporarily over-ride the UOM slate for the current reports only.
These are temporary UOM overrides and they are not stored at this point. Once the report is closed and re-
opened, the AVEVA PRO/II Simulation Output UOM slate is assumed.
Q12) I tried to drag and drop individual elements of vectors. I see that the entire vector is dragged and
dropped. Why?
A) Drag and drop of individual elements is not yet supported in AVEVA Excel Simulation Reports application. Also,
any operations like "Move Up, Move Down, Delete, Format Cell" etc. do not work on individual elements of
vectors. These will be addressed in future versions.
Q13) How do I generate formatted reports, e.g., TEMA reports, using AVEVA Excel Simulation Reports
application?
A) Formatted reports are not yet supported. They will be implemented in future versions of AVEVA Excel
Simulation Reports application.
Q14) The Excel report generated using AVEVA Excel Simulation Reports application looks different from Tools-
>Spreadsheet. Why? Which one should I use?
A) The AVEVA Excel Simulation Reports application is a new reporting tool that gives the user the flexibility of
configuring the units and parameters that show up in the report whereas the Spreadsheet option generates pre-
defined reports. User can use either one based on his needs.
Q15) What happens when I import a report in a different simulation?
A) You could import a report exported from say "a1.prz" to "a2.prz". In this case, the units with same name and
class in both files will be displayed. All the views in the imported file will be available for the simulation as local
views.
Q16) If I have a custom view with the same name as global view which one takes precedence?
A) The custom (local) view will take the precedence.
Q17) Why is it that I see numbers displayed too many places after the decimal point? Is there a way to control
the number of digits?
A) In the current version, this is a limitation. You need to use the Excel features to control the display in the cells.

Constraints using AVEVA Excel Simulation

Q1.When does the data modified in AVEVA Excel Simulation reflect in AVEVA PRO/II Simulation?

Version 2024
© 2015-2024 AVEVA Group Limited or its subsidiaries. All rights reserved. Page 19
AVEVA™ PRO/II™ Simulation Release Notes
Important: Read First

A) If you open AVEVA Excel Simulation in standalone mode, the modified data does not reflect in the AVEVA
PRO/II Simulation immediately. While closing AVEVA Excel Simulation file if you save changes in the simulation,
they are retained and reflect in the simulation when you open it the next time.
If you open AVEVA Excel Simulation through AVEVA PRO/II Simulation, the modified data reflects immediately in
the AVEVA PRO/II Simulation. Even if you delete the changes from AVEVA Excel Simulation, they remain in the
simulation database. Therefore, if you do not want the changes to be saved in the AVEVA PRO/II Simulation
database, close the simulation without saving it.
Note: As AVEVA PRO/II Simulation GUI and AVEVA Excel Simulation are two independent interfaces interacting
with the AVEVA PRO/II Simulation database, it is recommended that you use only one interface at a time to
update or modify data in the simulation, else there can be errors and loss of data.
Q2.Why "Description" and "Value" cells cannot have different alignment formats?
A) As "Description" and "Value" cells for an attribute are clubbed together, they cannot have different alignment
formats once the attribute is dropped on the worksheet. However, a workaround is available. To achieve the
required alignment, you can format the alignment of the cells before dropping attributes (Scalar or Vector) on
them.
Q3.In AVEVA Excel Simulation, what are the limitations of Specifications and Variables specified in AVEVA
PRO/II Simulation software?
A: In AVEVA PRO/II Simulation software, a meaningful sentence is displayed for the specification and variable
inputs. In AVEVA Excel Simulation, you can just change the specification values for units like Controller, MVC,
Column, Splitter, and Flash (Product Specification). You cannot change specification type, say a Duty specification
on a Flash to Isothermal specification from the AVEVA Excel Simulation. For a configured AVEVA Excel Simulation
file, you can change the values of the specification and analyze the results.
Q4.Do MS Excel Security Settings need to be verified before starting any task in AVEVA Excel Simulation?
A) Yes. If the Security Settings are not set properly, some of the features do not work and cause errors.
Q5.Can a stream, a unit operation, or an attribute be searched on Flowsheet Explorer?
A) Yes. Type the first few letters of the stream, unit operation, or the attribute you are searching in the Filter
search box available on Flowsheet Explorer. The filtered results will be displayed to you in Flowsheet Explorer.
Note: You need to expand all the nodes of Flowsheet Explorer to see the filtered results.
Q6.When a vector attribute is dragged and dropped onto an empty cell just below scalar attribute, AVEVA
Excel Simulation displays the following warning: "Existing parameter reference will be overwritten." Why?
A) The vector attribute requires two cells above the cell where it is dropped. One for vector heading and the
other for vector UOM. If you drop it just one cell below the scalar attribute, AVEVA Excel Simulation displays this
error to prevent overwriting necessary attributes. Drop the vector two cells below the scalar attribute to avoid
this warning.
Q7.In AVEVA PRO/II Simulation software output options, I have selected "Two reports, one in Input UOM, one
in Output UOM". But, I always see the values only in Output Slate in AVEVA Excel Simulation. Why?
A) At this point, by default, only the Output Slate is supported in AVEVA Excel Simulation.
Q8.How are the performance specifications shown for the Unit Operations?
A) For the unit operations like Column, Controller, MVC, and Splitter, the performance specifications are shown
without their long descriptions and UOMs.

Q9.What should I do when a AVEVA Excel Simulation file is emailed to me from another computer?
When a AVEVA Excel Simulation file is emailed to you, do not double-click it. First save it in your computer, open
it in standalone mode, and then direct it to the supporting simulation it has found out through schema
evolution.
If you double-click the emailed file, it will fail to connect to right simulation.
Q10.What Operating System specifications do I need to have in my computer before installing AVEVA Excel
Simulation?
A) AVEVA Excel Simulation is supported on Windows 8 and above.
Q11.Is there a sample AVEVA Excel Simulation file to get started with AVEVA Excel Simulation? If yes, how to
use it?
A) Yes, there are a few sample files that you can start with. They are saved at the following location: "…
\Documents\Simsci\ProII2023\Applib\S4MWorkbooks".
1. Multiple Simulations Link_Chiller Plant - 1 and 2.xlsm
2. Homotopy.xlsm
3. Column Interface.xlsm
4. ColumnProfile.xlsm
5. Naptha Assay_Case Study.xlsm
You can open these files in standalone mode, from AVEVA PRO/II Simulation software, or by double- clicking
them directly.
Q12.How to install the patch for AVEVA Excel Simulation?
A) The AVEVA Excel Simulation patch gets automatically installed when you install AVEVA PRO/II Simulation
software patch.
Q13.I have installed the AVEVA PRO/II Simulation software patch but AVEVA Excel Simulation has not been
installed in my computer. Why?
A) This can happen if AVEVA Excel Simulation was not installed with the earlier version of AVEVA PRO/II
Simulation or if it has been manually uninstalled after installing AVEVA PRO/II Simulation.
In such a situation, you need to install AVEVA Excel Simulation by modifying the current installation from Add/
Remove programs in Control Panel.
Q14.When I double-click a .xlsm file, it displays the following error: ‘Office Document Customization is not
available". Why?
A) This error is displayed if you do not have AVEVA Excel Simulation installed in your system.

Figure 59. Error message "Office Document Customization is not available" is displayed.
Q15.Sometimes AVEVA Excel Simulation is launched in User mode for Developer's license key. Why?
A) If all developer licenses on the FNP server are used up, AVEVA Excel Simulation launches in user mode. Check
the availability of developer’s licenses if this happens.
Q16.An error message "Error while adding/locating AVEVA PRO/II Simulation software related menu items.
Object reference not set to instance of the object" is displayed when I double-click on PORTAL 2.3 version file
with Portal 2.4 version file already open and vice versa.
A) This is a VSTO and MS Excel limitation (design constraint). If the user wishes to launch the two versions of
AVEVA Excel Simulation at the same time, the user should first launch an instance of excel workbook and drag
and drop the AVEVA Excel Simulation file in to that instance of excel workbook.
Q17.When I Zoom in/Zoom out on the AVEVA Excel Simulation worksheet, text on UOM widget is invisible.
What should I do?
A) This is a limitation of Zoom in/Zoom out feature in AVEVA Excel Simulation Worksheet. To view the text on
UOM widget properly, set 100% zoom on the worksheet.
Q18.What will happen if I drag-drop scalars below vectors for which the length may change?
A) If you drag-drop scalars below vectors for which the length may change, their arrangement/format will be
disturbed.
Drop scalars above such vectors to avoid unnecessary changes in their formats.

Q19.What will happen if Microsoft Office is installed after installing SIMSCI application using AVEVA Excel
Simulation module?
A) AVEVA Excel Simulation module installation requires MS Office as pre-requisite. If you try to install AVEVA
Excel Simulation module before installing MS Office, an error message is displayed and AVEVA Excel Simulation
installation gets canceled.
Q20.How can we connect AVEVA Excel Simulation to OPCUA Server 1.2 using certificate security?
A) Set OPCUA to "True" in SIM4MEPortal.ini file and launch the AVEVA PRO/II Simulation software or AVEVA
Excel Simulation in "Run As Administrator" mode.
Q21.What are the restrictions on double-clicking the pre-configured AVEVA Excel Simulation file?
A) If the AVEVA Excel Simulation file is pre-configured with an old version of simulation, open it either through
AVEVA PRO/II Simulation software or through the standalone mode of the current version of AVEVA Excel
Simulation. User should complete this procedure while opening the AVEVA Excel Simulation file in a machine
different from the working machine.
Q22.How to migrate the AVEVA Excel Simulation files from the old version to the new version of AVEVA PRO/II
Simulation?
A) In the old version of PRO/II, disconnect the simulation and save the AVEVA Excel Simulation file, and then
open the same file with the same simulation in the new version of AVEVA PRO/II Simulation software.
Q23.What do I do when Reports and AVEVA Excel Simulation are not launching because multiple products are
installed?
A) Using administrator credentials run "PortalRecovery.bat" file available at AVEVA Excel Simulation bin directory.
Q24.In AVEVA Excel Simulation file, can I copy data from a single row or column?
A) Due to MS Excel limitations, while selecting single row or column that has AVEVA Excel Simulation links in it,
the adjoining cells also get selected. This prevents copying data from single row or column.
Q25.How to open AVEVA Excel Simulation if the location or name of the simulation database is changed?
A) Open AVEVA Excel Simulation file. It will try to connect to the configured AVEVA PRO/II Simulation database. If
the associated simulation file does not exist at the original location or it has been renamed or moved, the
following error message appears.

Figure 60. Simulation file missing message is displayed.

Q28. What do I do if the adapter crashes/popup window comes while opening/creating a AVEVA Excel
Simulation file?
A). When user is unable to launch/Open a AVEVA Excel Simulation file with the following popup message, then
follow below workaround to resolve it:

1. Rename or delete the "VSTOInstaller.exe.Config" file from below location:

• For 32bit MS-Office : C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\VSTO\10.0
• For 64bit MS-Office : C:\Program Files \Common Files\Microsoft Shared\VSTO\10.0
2. Install "S4M.ExcelInterface.vsto" manually by double clicking it from AVEVA Excel Simulation install location
based on the type of MS-Office installed:
• For 32bit MS-Office : C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\SimSci\SIM4MEPortal\Bin
• For 64bit MS-Office : C:\Program Files\Common Files\SimSci\SIM4MEPortal\Bin
Q29. User have any limitations over accessing AVEVA Excel Simulation with OPCUA = "true"?
A) Yes, there is a problem in restoring of links. If user configured a AVEVA Excel Simulation file using OPCUA =
"false" then opening this same file using OPCUA = "true" fails to restore the links but same situation works
perfectly in reverse case.
Q 30. How to resolve the AVEVA Excel Simulation launching issue "System Policy prevents loading manifests"?
A). "System policy prevents loading manifests" issue is resolved by making the changes for MS-Office Excel
ActiveX settings through registry Policies.

User need to create the "DisableAllActiveX" registry key under the following registry path:
[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Office\Common\Security]
"DisableAllActiveX"=dword:00000000

Version 2024

AVEVA™ PRO/II™ Simulation Release Notes
Important: Read First

This process would enable the ActiveX controls to be loaded for the AVEVA Excel Simulation application. Make
sure the entry is created in the registry.
Also make sure the excel is activated with the proper signed in user.
Q 31. The Flowsheet Explorer in AVEVA Excel Simulation is not loading (or) empty
A) To resolve this issue:
1. Change the locale in Operating System’s regional settings from English > Japan in the control panel.
2. Restart the machine.

3. Launch the AVEVA Excel Simulation for any file and check if the flowsheet explorer is loading properly.
4. If you don’t want Japanese locale then change back to English and restart the machine.
If the issue persists, try another suggested workaround of upgrading the Windows 10 OS to a higher version.

Q 32. What should one do when Windows is unable to open the Pre-Configured AVEVA Excel Simulation file by
double clicking it?
A) This issue is because of the file association problem. Windows doesn’t know about which program has to
open this type of file system(*.xlp).

To resolve this issue:

1. Migrate the simulation file which is associated to this AVEVA Excel Simulation.
2. Right-click the file and go to Properties.

3. Click the Change button and then select the program to associate it.
4. Click OK. Double-click the Pre-Configured AVEVA Excel Simulation file to open.
Q 33. What should I do if AVEVA Excel Simulation is not launching with Office 365?

Version 2024

AVEVA™ PRO/II™ Simulation Release Notes
Important: Read First

A) Sometimes the Windows updates can modify the installed VSTO prerequisite, thus launching AVEVA Excel
simulation can be a problem. This is an outstanding issue from Microsoft. User needs to quick repair the Office
365 and restart the machine, then launch AVEVA Excel Simulation.

UAS/PDTS Capabilities
Incompatibility of Previous UAS Versions with AVEVA PRO/II Simulation
2021
Users using the User-Added Subroutine (UAS) or PRO/II Data Transfer System (PDTS) capabilities should compile
and link their code using the following compiler:
• Intel® Visual FORTRAN version 2020 for Windows (Standard or Professional Edition).
• Starting with version 2021, PRO/II supports only 64-bit configurations. Users need to update the UAS
binaries to 64-bit configuration to use with PRO/II.
Note: The Compaq Visual FORTRAN compiler (all versions) is not compatible with PRO/II version 2021.
If you previously used Compaq Visual FORTRAN:
All projects created using this tool no longer are compatible with PRO/II. Replacement solutions and projects
constructed under Visual Studio 2019 architecture for the Intel 2020 compiler now are shipped with PRO/II.
(Compiler version 10.0 and 12.0 is compatible, but not compliant, with Windows Vista.)
Static Modular UAS Projects no longer are supported.
Existing static projects must be rebuilt as dynamic projects. When Compaq Visual FORTRAN was removed from
the market, users were forced to use Intel Visual FORTRAN, which became incompatible with PRO/II. The older
static projects existed only to allow projects developed using the Intel compiler to function in a limited way with
PRO/II. With version 8.3, the need for static modular projects disappeared, and the static projects have been
withdrawn.

New Project Files for Version AVEVA PRO/II Simulation 2022 User-Added
Subroutines
Older project files have been replaced by newer ones, often in different directories. Project files were located in
different directories, depending upon whether the were classic UAS, newer modular UAS, or PDTS projects. The
replacement locations shown below assume
(a) the Install PDTS/UAS option was active and
(b) no changes were made to the default path during installation of AVEVA PRO/II Simulation 2022.

New Files for PDTS Examples

New Visual Studio Net 2019 PDTS project files are installed in the default location:
[User Documents]:\SIMSCI\PROII2022\User\Pdts\Examples\IF8\
A "solution" file and a "FORTRAN project" file are furnished for each example. For instance, example Exam1 is
composed of solution file Exam1.sln and FORTRAN project file Exam.vfproj.

New Files for Classic UAS Examples

New Visual Studio Net 2019 project files for the classic UAS interface are installed in the default location:
[User Documents]\SIMSCI\PROII2022\User\Uas\Examples\IF8\
Since classic UAS implements all additions in a single dynamic link library, there are only two project files:
• UasLb.sln Open this solution file using Visual Studio NET 2019.
• UasLb.vfproj The only project in the delivered solution.
The files listed above are newly added along with the project files built with Net 2003 and Net 2008 located at
[User Documents]\SIMSCI\PROII2022\User\Uas\Examples\VF6\.

New Files for Modular UAS Examples

New Visual Studio Net 2019 project files for the modular UAS interface are installed in the default location:
[User Documents]\SIMSCI\PROII2022\User\Uas\UasF91\IVF\
Modular UAS allows using a separate project for each implementation. As delivered, version 10.2 includes two
projects: one for modular utilities and another for modular unit operations. The project files include:
• ExUasF91.sln Open this solution file using Visual Studio NET 2013 to build modular utilities.
• ExUasF91.vfproj This is the only project in the ExUasF91 solution. It includes utilities for computing interfacial
area, mass transfer, and heat transfer in RATEFRAC.
• ExUop.sln Open this solution file using Visual Studio NET 2013 to build modular unit operations.
• ExUop1.vfproj The only project in the ExUop solution, this project builds one dynamic unit operation.
All the projects listed above are dynamic. Static projects no longer are supported. The files listed above replace
older project files previously located in the same directory.

Source code changes required for Intel Visual FORTRAN 2020

PRO/II 9.0 and PRO/II 9.1 are built with Intel Visual FORTRAN 10.1. PRO/II 9.2, PRO/II 9.3 and PRO/II 9.4 are built
with Intel Visual FORTRAN 12.0. PRO/II 10.0, PRO/II 10.1, PRO/II 10.2 and PRO/II 2020 is built with Intel Visual
FORTRAN 15.0. PRO/II 10.2 is compatible and may be used until version 12.0 or a newer version can be obtained.
When upgrading older projects, please keep the following considerations in mind.
There are two cases when PRO/II opens an output file and passes the associated FORTRAN unit number to your
PDTS or UAS code:
• PDTS application: the NFOUT argument of the PAOPEN() subroutine
• User-Added Subroutine: IDATA(6) of the USERnn subroutine
In both of these cases, PRO/II calls the FORTRAN OPEN statement to open a file and passes the unit number to
the PDTS application or UAS. To avoid problems, the utility subroutine PAWRITE has been provided to allow your
application to write output to an external file. The following code fragments illustrate the required changes:
Original PDTS example:
CHARACTER(LEN=8) :: NAME
. . .

1001 FORMAT(‘Enter File Name ’) 1002 FORMAT(A)

1003 FORMAT(‘Data Reported for File = ’, A10) WRITE(*, 1001)
READ(*, 1002) NAME
.
CALL PAOPEN (NAME, ‘ ’, NFOUT, IRCODE) WRITE (NFOUT, 1003) NAME
Modified PDTS example using PAWRITE: CHARACTER(LEN=8) :: NAME CHARACTER(LEN=133) CHARDATA
. . .
1001 FORMAT(‘Enter File Name ’) 1002 FORMAT(A)
1003 FORMAT(‘Data Reported for File = ’,A10) WRITE(*, 1001)
READ(*, 1002) NAME
.
CALL PAOPEN (NAME, ‘ ’, NFOUT, IRCODE) WRITE (CHARDATA, 103) NAME
PAWRITE (NFOUT, CHARDATA)
Note the modified code does not directly write the output to the file unit number NFOUT. Instead, it writes the
output to a character variable; then calls the utility subroutine PAWRITE() that tells PRO/II to write the contents
of the character variable CHARDATA to file unit number NFOUT.
Original UAS example:
SUBROUTINE USER42(IPARM,RPARM,SUPPLE,HEAT,IDATA, & ISOLVE, ISTOP )
. . .
CHARACTER*12 CID
1001 FORMAT(' ERROR !! FEED STREAM ',A12,' IS MISSING').
. . .
IOUT = IDATA(6) C
C RETRIEVE FEED STREAM C
CALL URXINF('FEED',1,CID,CNAME,IERR) IF (IERR. NE. 0) THEN
IPARM(2) = 1 WRITE(IOUT,1001) CID ISOLVE = 1
ISTOP = 1
GO TO 9999 ENDIF
UAS example modified to use PAWRITE:
SUBROUTINE & USER42(IPARM,RPARM,SUPPLE,HEAT,IDATA,ISOLVE,ISTOP)
..
CHARACTER(LEN=12) ::CID CHARACTER(LEN=133) :: CHARDATA
1001 FORMAT(' ERROR !! FEED STREAM ',A12, & ' IS MISSING').
. . .
IOUT = IDATA(6) C
C RETRIEVE FEED STREAM C
CALL URXINF('FEED',1,CID,CNAME,IERR) IF (IERR. NE. 0) THEN
IPARM(2) = 1
WRITE (CHARDATA, 1001) CID PAWRITE (IOUT, CHARDATA) ISOLVE = 1
ISTOP = 1
GO TO 9999 ENDIF

Running PDTS Applications

Note: If you call subroutine FIGETU to get a file unit number and then call OPEN() in your own PDTS or UAS code,
you do not need to make any code changes to the READ or WRITE statements because both the OPEN and the
file input/output is accomplished within code compiled by the same compiler.

Defects Summary

PDTS is no longer supported but left around for old compatibility. PDTS applications are designed to execute in a
virtual DOS environment from a Command prompt. When you execute a PDTS application, you may get the
following message:
The dynamic link library PESCalcMain.dll could not be found in the specified path
To run PDTS applications, it sometimes is necessary to add additional directories to the system PATH so that the
PDTS application can locate PESCalcMain.dll and the other required DLLs.
This can be done by executing the batch file SetPDTS.bat, located in the "user" directory. That command file
modifies the PATH of the current Command Prompt session to enable running PDTS applications in that
Command Prompt session.
If you start a second Command Prompt session, then you will need It may be necessary to execute the
SetPDTS.BAT batch file in each Command session that you open.
It is *not* recommended to change the system PATH in the Control Panel, because such a change may impact
other installed applications.
It is not necessary to execute SetPDTS.BAT to run the PRO/II GUI or any of the installed batch files such as
"runp2.bat".
