A Very Good Morning To All

A 22-year-old male patient presented to the emergency department after being stung by a scorpion on his left foot at 12:20 am. On examination, he had mild swelling and tenderness over his left foot. He was given medications and advised to stay for observation but left against medical advice. Scorpion stings can cause pain, tingling, numbness and other symptoms due to toxins in their venom. Treatment involves washing the area, applying ice, pain medication and sometimes antivenom depending on the scorpion species.

SCORPION STING

• SCORPIONS are members of the ARACHNIDA class and are closely related to
spiders,ticks and mites.

• SCORPIONS have 2 pincers,8 legs and an elongated body with a tail

• Normally they range in length about 9to 21cm

• THE last tail segment contains the stinger also known as a telson transmits the
toxin through sting

• MOST SCORPIONS ARE HARMLESS

• THERE are around 200 species out of which only 25-40 species deliver enough
venom to cause damage to human-beings.

• BARK SCORPION is the most venomous species found in UNITED STATES


• SYMPTOMS OF SCORPION STING ARE:

• PAIN,TINGLING,BURNING SENSATION,NUMBNESS AT THE STING

• SOB

• BLURRED VISION

• SEIZURES

• THE SCORPION STING CONTAINS A PROTEIN TOXIN’THE TOXIN


CONTAINS MIXTURE OF NEUROTOXIN AND PROTEIN INHIBITORS
• TREATMENT :

• WASH THE STING SITE WITH SOAP(OUTSIDE HOSPITAL)

• APPLY ICE PACK FOR AROUND 10 TO 15 MINS

• NSAIDS TO RELEIVE PAIN

• ANTIBIOTICS HAVE NO ROLE UNLESS -SECONDRY INFECTION

• ANTIVENOM(ANASCORP)- THERAPY FOR BARK SCORPION
