INTRODUCTION
• M.Phil. in Nursing as believed by the Indian Nursing Council is a
formal educational preparation based on sound education
preparation. It is recognized by the council as a course opted by
the student to be responsible to the society for the continued
development of the student as an individual nurse and citizen.
• In 1980 RAK college of nursing started an MPhil programme as  a
regular and part time course. Since then several universities
started taking students for the MPhil course in nursing.
• Prominent among these are: MGR Medical University, Rajiv
Gandhi University of Health Sciences, SNDT University and Delhi
University and Manipal Academy of Higher Education
PHILOSOPHY
• Nursing shares with the whole university a main focus of
preparing its students for service and assisting them to achieve
a meaningful philosophy of life. The student is encouraged to
develop judgment and wisdom in handling knowledge and skills
and achieve mastery of problem solving and creative skills.
• Commitment to life long learning is the mark of truly
professional person. In order to maintain clinical competencies
and enhance professional practice  the student must stay
abrupt  of the new developments and contribute to the
advancement of nursing knowledge.
OBJECTIVES
1. To strengthen the research foundations of nurses for
encouraging research attitudes and problem solving
capacities
2. To provide basic training required for research in
undertaking doctoral work
DURATION
• The duration of full-time Master of Philosophy in
Nursing is 2 years consisting of four semesters.
Eligibility for M.Phil. Nursing

• The students opting for this degree should have secured at


least 55% in their Master’s Degree from a recognized Indian
Nursing Council or equivalent in the subject or any allied
subject in which they wish to pursue the course, provided
that the Master's degree is obtained after taking the
Bachelor's degree. Some colleges offer a 5% relaxation in
the marks for the candidates belonging to the categories of
OBC/SBC/SC/ST/Physically handicapped.
Admission Process for M.Phil. Nursing

• Admissions are basically done on the basis of selection test


consisting a written test and an interview thereafter. The written
test generally consists of multiple choice questions and
subjective questions containing the subjects such as Nursing
Theories, Nursing Research, Statistics, Nursing Education,
Nursing Administration and Current issues in health and Nursing.
To know about the upcoming entrance examinations the
students have to check respective website of the desired college.
• Admission to the M.Phil in Nursing is done on the basis of marks
secured by the candidates in the last qualifying exam.
• In some private institutes, the candidates also need to appear in
the Written Test followed by Personal Interview
COURSE OF STUDY
• At the time of admission each candidate will be required to
indicate her priorities in regard to the optional courses .a
candidate may offer one course from M Phil programme
from the department of Anthropology, education, sociology
and physiology or any suitable department.
• The M.Phil studies will be into two distinct parts, part1 and
part 2.
• Part1----it consist of 3 courses, ie research methods in
nursing, major aspects of nursing, allied disciplines 

• Part2----after passing the part1 examination, a student shall


be required to write a dissertation. The topic and the nature
of the dissertation  of each candidate will be determined by
the advisory committee consist of 3 members. The
dissertation may include results of original research, a fresh
interpretation of existing facts, and date or a review article
of critical nature of may take.

Career prospects after M.Phil. Nursing

• It is very easy to get a job in government and private hospitals,


industries and armed forces after having completed this course.
They can also seek employment in the Indian Red Cross Society,
Indian Nursing Council, State Nursing Council and various other
nursing institutions.
• They can also take up administrative and teaching positions in
medical colleges and nursing schools. The entrepreneurs can
also start their own nursing bureaus on their own terms and
conditions.
• In Addition to this they can also earn international nursing
certificates and fulfill the prescribed immigration criteria to
move abroad.

Salary
• Nursing career has always been in demand with the
increase in private hospitals and nursing homes, the
demand for trained nurses has increased a lot. The
nurses have an important role to play, right from
taking care of patients to administering medicines
and also to maintain the day-to-day records of the
patients and also arranging medical equipment
Scheme of Assessment
• The students are required to attend at least 75% lectures, seminars
and practical classes, all of them taken together held in each paper
of the course work.
• The students also have to write a dissertation which must be
submitted at the end of 2nd semester and needs to be approved by
an external examiner for the student to appear in the examination.
• Most of the colleges do not allot any marks for the dissertation.
The examination mainly consists of two theory papers. The student
has to showcase their knowledge of the subjects taught in the
course work.
Scheme of Assessment
• Apart from these, there shall be two practical examinations. The
marks obtained in the theory and practical papers shall be
graded in terms of awarding the student in respect of 1st or
2nd division.
• The candidates obtaining 75% or more will be graded as
1st division with distinction, more than 65% but less than 75% as
1st division, more than 50% but less than 65%as 2nd division.
• This is the general division of marks for most of the colleges but
some colleges might also have an exception.
