Understanding Local Networks

Here is an infographic my team created for the climate change conference on the migration of people due to climate change: [INFROGRAPHIC] The infographic contains the following information: - Statistics on the number of people displaced by climate change related events such as floods, droughts, etc. - Examples of push factors like food insecurity, water scarcity, natural disasters that force people to migrate - Examples of countries and regions where climate migration originates from and where people migrate to - Impacts of climate migration like loss of livelihoods, homelessness, health issues - Calls to action for governments and the global community to address the climate crisis and support climate refugees

Learning outcomes

Having worked through this chapter you should be able to:

Define network and its importance to relationships and
organizations;
Explain strategic analysis and intuitive thinking; and
Attain facility in strategic analysis by mapping out a
power relations in the community
“ONLINE LIFE IS SO DELICIOUS BECAUSE IT IS SOCIALIZING WITH
ALMOST NO FRICTION.”
- DAVID BROOKS
1. What does this quotation tell us as a human
being?

2. How is real life compared to the online life as

described by the authors?
Our relationships are networked. If you
look at the nature, networks are
everywhere.
Networks are analyzed in terms of
Density, Hierarchy, Complexity,
Interdependence and Embeddedness.
DENSITY
The Density of a network is based on the number
of connections between and among actors.
According to Kinduf and Tsai, the higher the
number the denser the system.
HIERARCH
Y
Actors in a network can pull their investments in social
relations by establishing relations with a diverse set of
groups in community ( preferably groups that are not
connected to each other), rather than establishing all of
their relationships with members of one group.
COMPLEXITY
Complexity is the extent to which a link
between to actors severe a multiplicity of
interests in a community
INTERDEPENDENCE
• The ties in the network can be useful in facilitating
changes and reform. It facilitates cooperation and
creates social capital necessary for the progress of
the community.

• Social capital is the accumulated benefits as a result

of the maintenance of a positive relationship
between different groups and association in the
community.
EMBEDDEDNESS
The networks of relations within which each person is rooted
include family, friends, acquaintances. To be sure, business
and associations themselves are held together by formal
relations of power as well as by casual connections that
interface individuals crosswise over departmental and
progressive limits.
ACTIVITY 1
Write the advantages and disadvantages of
using Social Media to network and analyze it
through Density, hierarchy, multiplexity,
interdependence, and embeddedness.
ACTIVITY 2. SOCIAL
ANALYSIS THROUGH SOCIAL
MAPPING
1. Climate Change
2. Poverty
3. Educational System
4. LGBT/ GENDER EQUALITY
5. Political system
1. Is there an emerging pattern or trend in this networks
or relationship? What are the dominant themes in these
networks?
2. As a result of these networks, are we getting a better
understanding of the life of the community and its
problems?
3. What are the most important insights or a new ideas
that have surfaced or come to light as a result of this
network of analysis?
4. Is there a part of the problem that we can tackle now?
What is the first step we should take?
SUMMARY OF
KEY POINTS
a network is that group of people with whom we can
interact everyday.
The networks of relations within which each person is
embedded include family, friends, and acquaintances.
Technology enhances these varied networks regardless of
our location.
The social structures that we create and where we belong
are networked.
Our human existence and relationships are nested in
both local and global networks that constitute
meaning and action.
We are invited to look at the network of relationship
that continue to shape our personal and social life.
In an increasingly interconnected world, we can
understand ourselves only to the extent that we
understand others.
GLOBAL
NETWORK:
LABOR AND
MIGRATION
Change is inevitable in every aspect of life, both
personal and social. Such change is experiences
by people in various ways and in different
magnitude and consequences. The world today
is significantly experiencing theses changes in
the field of environment, culture, politics and
economics.
Globalization
UNDERSTANDING
GLOBALIZATION
“ Globalization could be the answer to many of
the world’s seemingly intractable problems. But
this requires strong democratic foundations based
on a political will to ensure equity and justice.”

-Sharran Burrow
1. How does globalization affect our lives?
2. Is globalization part of the world’s solution or
part of the problem?
3. Why should globalization matter to you?
4. What does migration reveal about
globalization?
5. How does globalization look like from the
perspective of labor?
Globalization is the most powerful force for
change in the world today affecting all
societies in the planet.
Globalization entails the movement of capital,
free flow of goods and services, the increased
mobility of individuals, and the expansion of
multinational corporations and transnational
organization.
GLOBALIZATION AND
MIGRATION
The issue of globalization is linked with
migration and with movement of capital and
commodities. Migration is said to be as old as
human civilization, and there is clear proof that
globalization is inextricably related to it.
WHAT IS MIGRATION?
National geographic defines migration as the movement of
people from one territory to another for the purpose of
taking up either a permanent or temporary residence. Such
movement can be considered as voluntary or involuntary,
long-term or short-term. This process has transpired
throughout history.
WHY DO PEOPLE MIGRATE?
People migrate for various reasons. The
reasons may fall under four categories:
Environmental, political, cultural, and
economic.
THE PUSH AND PULL FACTOR
OF MIGRATION
Push factors- are those that motivate people to move from
one place to another because of difficulty, such as food
shortage, war, flood, etc.
Pull factors- are those that motivate people to move from
their place to another place simply because of some
desirable reasons such as nicer climate, better food supply,
freedom and others.
TYPES OF MIGRATION
Internal migration- This is defined as the process where
migrants look for a new residence within their own country,
state, or continent.
External migration- moving in a different country, state, or
continent to a new residence.
Migration- leaving one country to move to another.
Immigration- moving into a new country
Forced immigration- this happens when the state or
authorities force its people to migrate for a reason.
MIGRATION,
GLOBALIZATION,
AND CLIMATE
CHANGE
Environmental refugees are people who have
been forced to leave their traditional habitat,
temporarily or permanently, because of a
marked environmental disruption ( natural or
triggered by people) that jeopardize their
existence and/or seriously affected the quality
of their life.
-Essam El Hinnawi
What is climate change?
250 Million people are permanently
displaced by climate change-related
phenomena, such as floods, drought,
famines and hurricane.
SUMMARY OF KEY
POINTS
 Hazardous events happen which include natural and technological
hazards have been on the rise around the world.
 The global consciousness that climate change may represent one of
the most significant threats of the near future has stimulated
humanity’s collective interest in disaster.
 Migration is a serious consequences of environmental degradation
and climate change.
Global ecological and environmental movements have
rightly observed that a new poor called climate refugees or
environmental refugees, emerges out of this situation .
They are the people who had been internally displaced, not
because of war, but by disaster.
Fifty million people have been displaced by natural
disasters.
The loss of homes and lands is a devastating experience,
affecting self-identity and well-being.
Suffering marks the lives of thousands of climate
refugees yet amid the sufferings and anguish, many of
them showed resiliency and courage when one expected
to see despair and misery.
There were countless stories of people rising from their
grief and loss after the devastating experience caused by
disaster.
Thousand of this climate refugees could no longer
return to their homes and had migrated to areas to find
jobs.
PERFORMANCE TASK
The Marian community will be having their annual Climate
Change awareness conference with the Theme “Adaptation to
Climate Change.” the conference will unite specialist, analyst,
researchers and understudies from all territories of basic
sciences. This will also be attended by people in any walks of
life. Your team is task to create an Infographics in regards with
the migration of people due to climate change that will raise
awareness to all the people present in the activity. This will be
evaluated by the Conference organizer using the following
criteria: visual style/appeal, content, focus and creativity and
overall impact.
