There are two types of clauses: independent clauses and dependent clauses. Independent clauses can stand alone as a sentence, while dependent clauses cannot. Dependent clauses include noun clauses, which function as nouns, adjective clauses, which function as adjectives, and adverb clauses, which function as adverbs and modify verbs, adjectives, or other adverbs. Adverb clauses indicate time, cause and effect, contrast, condition, or intensity. Common subordinating conjunctions used in adverb clauses include when, because, although, if, and unless.

CLAUSES

Clause is the smallest grammatical unit that can


express a complete proposition. It contains a
subject and a verb or predicate. There are two
kinds of clauses :
1. Independent clause
2. Dependent clause
Independent Clause
Independent clause is a group of words that can stand
on its own as a sentence : it has a subject, a verb, and
is a complete thought. And it has one clause.

Examples :
1. They dance under the rain (one clause)
2. Where is your sister? (one clause)
3. He is sleeping. (one clause)
Dependent Clause
Dependent clause is a group of words that contains a subject and a
verb, but is not a complete thought. Dependent clause cannot stand
on its own as a sentence. It has more then one clause.

Example :

1. He likes Chinese rice which tastes good.

2. I met the boy who had helped me.

3. The teacher asked a question but no one answered.


Types of Dependent Clause

Dependent clauses can be divided in other type


of clauses such as :
1. Noun clause
2. Adverb clause
3. Adjective clause
Noun Clause
A dependent clause that functions as a noun in a sentence is called noun
clause. A noun clause performs same function like a noun in a sentence.
A noun clause works as a noun that acts as a subjet, object, or predicate
in a sentence. A noun clause starts with words “what, whatever, who,
whom, that, whomever.

Example :
1. What he did made a problem for his family. (noun clause as a subject)

2. Whatever you learn will help you in future. ( noun clause as a subject)
3. He knows that he will pass the the test. (noun clause as an object).
4. Now I realize what he would have thought. (noun clause as an object)
Adjective Clause
A dependent clause that functions as an adjective
in a sentence is called adjective clause.

Example :
1. He wears a shirt which looks nice.
2. I meet the boy who had helped me.
3. An apple that smells bad is rotten.
4. The house where i live consists of four rooms.
Adverb Clause
A dependents clause that functions as an adverb
in a sentence is called adverb clause.
An adverb clause like an adverb clause like an
adverb modifies a verb, adjective clause or other
adverb clause in a sentence.
It modifies the situation in main clause in terms
of “time, frequency(how often), cause and
effect, contrast, condition, intensity(to what
extent).
The subordinating conjunctions used for
adverb clauses are as follows

Time : when, whenever, since, until, before, after, while, as,


by the time, as soon as.

Cause and effect : because, since, now, that, as long as, so, so
that.

Contrast : although, even, while, though.

Condition : if, unless, only if, whether or not, even if, in case.
Examples :
1. Don’t go before he comes.

2. He takes medicine because he is ill.

3. Although he tried a lot, he couldn’t climb up the tree.

4. Unless you study for the test, you can’t pass it.

5. I will go to school unless it rains.


Conclusion
In grammar, a clause is a combination of words within a sentence. It contains
a subject and a verb or predicate. There are two kinds of clauses:
1. Independent clause
2. Dependent clause

Independent clause has one clause(can stand on its own as a sentence).

Dependent clause has more than one clause(cannot stand on its own as a
sentence).
Dependent clauses can be divided in other type of clauses such as :
1. Noun clause
2. Adverb clause
3. Adjective clause
