NISHANTHINI Laboratory Protocol STUDY - IRB

This document describes a proposed study on infection control practices followed by dental laboratory professionals before and during the COVID era. The principal investigator and guide are listed. The study will involve a questionnaire survey of 115 dental laboratory professionals in Tamil Nadu, assessing their infection control protocols. A pilot study of 20 professionals found room for improvement in following guidelines. Statistical analysis will compare pre-COVID and current practices, with the hypothesis that there is no difference between the two time periods. The study aims to promote optimal infection control in dental laboratories on an ongoing basis.

TITLE OF THE PROPOSED STUDY :

INFECTION CONTROL FOLLOWED BY

DENTAL LABORATORY
PROFESSIONALS DURING PRE -COVID
AND COVID ERA
– A CROSS SECTIONAL
QUESTIONNAIRE STUDY
BACKGROUND
• Dentistry is a Speciality which involves exposure to fluids like
saliva , blood and various materials which is very infectious making
it necessary to maintain infection control of high standard and safety.
• There are study reporting that in 1 ml of saliva it contains 750 million
microorganism in a healthy individual.
• Often when infection control is focused only for dental treatment
office or surgical operative room while we fail to do same in dental
laboratories which is the hub of microorganisms
• Inspite of all this, infection control in dental laboratories is still a
question.
NON TECHNICAL SUMMARY

• Dentist and laboratory professional are at greater risk of cross

infection while doing procedures /treatment. So, is necessary
for us to maintain infection control practice with high
standard.
AIM OF THE STUDY
The aim of our study is to assess the infection control protocol
employed by dental laboratory professionals before Covid and
Covid (now) in various laboratories in Tamil Nadu
HYPOTHESIS AND NULL HYPOTHESIS

• THE HYPOTHESIS PRESUMED WAS THERE WOULD BE

NO DIFFERENCE IN INFECTION CONTROL PRACTICE
FOLLOWED BY LABORATORY PROFESSIONALS BEFORE
COVID AND NOW.
• THE NULL HYPOTHESIS PRESUMED WAS THERE WOULD
BE DIFFERENCE IN INFECTION CONTROL PRACTICE
FOLLOWED BY LABORATORY PROFESSIONALS BEFORE
COVID AND NOW
MATERIAL AND METHOD
• STUDY DESIGN:

Convenient sampling.
sample size = 115
• STUDY SURVEY:
A self-administered questionnaire was formulated containing 20 questions with two parts.
- Part A pertaining to practice before Covid,
- Part B pertaining to practice carried out now.
Part B was further subdivided into session one and two.
Session one included questions regarding the disinfection practice carried out after receiving
from hospitals/clinic .
Session two included questions regarding the disinfection practice carried before sending it to
clinic from laboratory.

We included demographic data like age, gender, speciality, position ,years of experience.
PILOT STUDY
• We did pilot study in 20 dental laboratory
professionals in Chennai.
• Google forms were sent through mail to
different laboratories in Chennai and telephone
survey was also carried out .Responses were
collected and results in percentage difference
were obtained.
Results from pilot study
• From the above obtained results from pilot
study, we can understand that infection protocol
is given prime importance and there is a definite
improvement during COVID . But still it is not
practiced 100% and not practiced according to
guidelines.

• We would like continue our study among

various laboratories in Tamil Nadu
STATISTICAL ANALYSIS:

• After further study,

• Responses will be collected and statistical analysis will be
done ,Chi sq test will be used to check the significance . SPSS
software version 17 will be used.
CLINICAL IMPLICATION:
• Dental laboratories are one of the hubs of cross
contamination of infections.
• Infection Control practice is not a procedure that
is to be followed only while handling works of
serious disease like hepatitis, HIV, Covid-19.
• It must be a regular routine which is to be
followed in a day to day practice.
