Fundamentals of sustainable building
materials
• Importance of sustainable building materials
• shortage of natural resources for construction
• Introduction to Municipal solid waste
• Generation
• source of waste
• classification of type of solid waste
• collection-segregation- physical, chemical and biological properties of waste
• Structure and properties of main classification of materials- metals,
polymers and ceramics

Importance of sustainable materials
• Housing for All Mission launched in June, 2015 envisages construction
of these dwelling units by 2022
• “Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (Urban) - Housing for All” Mission for
urban area is being implemented during 2015-2022 and this Mission
will provide central assistance to implementing agencies through
States and UTs for providing houses to all eligible families/
beneficiaries by 2022.

Introduction to C&D waste
• Historical Background of Construction Waste Management
• Recycling of demolition waste was first carried out after the Second World War in
Germany to tackle the problem of disposing large amount of demolition waste
caused by the war and simultaneously generate raw material for reconstruction.
• Considerable research has been carried out in U.S.A, Japan, U.K, France,
Germany, Denmark and in other developed countries for recycling concrete,
masonry, bricks, bituminous and other constituents of waste from Construction
Industry
• 70% of the construction industry is not aware of recycling techniques and
concludes the need for quality standards for recycled aggregate materials

Importance of sustainable materials

• The Swachh Bharat Mission (SBM)

of Govt. of India under MoHUA Demand of building by Building Materials and
has targeted processing of 100% materials Technology Promotion
solid waste including C&D waste in Council (BMTPC)
major cities/towns.
• This would not only provide the cement 380 million tonne
clean environment but would also
make available valuable Steel 50 million tonne

Importance of sustainable materials
• Data shows that there is a considerable amount of shortage of
conventional and traditional building materials in India
• Of late fine aggregate has been imported.
• Zero-based estimate with existing housing stock of 110,139,853 urban
and 220,695,914 rural (Census 2011), its rate of renovation and new
construction of 5.75 billion sq. m area during 2005-2012, the average
annual generation of C&D waste works out to 100 million tonne.
• Ministry of Urban Development in 2012 has desired all states to set
up C&D waste recycling facilities in all the cities/towns with
population over 1 million

Introduction to Municipal Solid Waste

Friday, February 25, 2022 12

MSW
• Municipal Solid Waste (MSW) more commonly known as trash or garbage
consists of household waste, construction and demolition debris, sanitation
residue, and waste from streets.
• This garbage is generated mainly from residential and commercial
complexes.
• With rising urbanization and change in lifestyle and food habits, the amount
of municipal solid waste has been increasing rapidly and its composition
changing.
• This comes from our homes, schools, hospitals, and businesses. Municipal
Solid Waste does have four broad category-Organic, Toxic, Recyclable, BMW.
MSW- constituents
• Organic Waste: kitchen waste, vegetables, flowers, leaves, fruits etc.

• Toxic Waste: Old medicines, paints, chemicals, bulbs, spray cans,

fertilizer pesticide containers, batteries etc.
• Recyclable : Paper, glass, metals, plastics.
• BMW : Hospital waste such as cloth soiled with blood and other body
fluids.

Management for MSW
• Management is the collection, transportation, processing, recycling and disposal,
monitoring of waste materials.
• The term usually relates to materials produced by human activity, cand is generally
undertaken to reduce their effect on health, the environment or aesthetic.
• Waste management can involve solid, liquid, gaseous or radioactive substances.
• Waste management practices differ for developed and developing nations, for urban
and rural areas.
• Management for non-hazardous waste residential and institutional waste is usually
the responsibility of local government authorities, while management for hazardous
commercial and industrial waste is usually the responsibility of the generator.
