FACTORS AFFECTING/

MODULAR LEARNING TO THE

ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE OF
GRADE- 11 STUDENTS IN
PANGDAN NATIONAL HIGH SCHOOL
June 17, 2022
INTRODUCTION
BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

Due to the Health threat of the pandemic, the DEPED decided to bring Education to the comfort of

their Homes as they continuously developed different learning modalities to ensure that Education is

accessible to all and ensure the continuity of Education. The sudden transition from the traditional to

new normal in the teaching and learning process, three learning modalities were offered the DEPED for

the school year 2020-2021, blended, distance and home-schooling learning modalities. According to

the Llego (2020), blended learning is a combined face-to-face with any or a combination of online

distance learning, modular learning and TV/radio-based instruction. On the other hand, distance

learning modality refers to a learning modality where learning takes place between the teacher and the

students who are geographically distant from each other during the teaching-learning process

GRADE 11 STUDENTS IN PANGDAN

NATIONAL HIGH SCHOOL
THEORITICAL FRAMEWORK
In relation to the study, Wedemeyer (1981) identifies essential elements of independent learning as greater

student responsibility, widely available instruction, effect mix of media and method, adaptation to Individual

differences, and a wide variety of start, stop and learn time.

Also, modular learning is a concept that covers the learning-teaching activities in the cognitive and/or psycho-

motor and effective domains of an Individual learner and a supporting organization. It characterized by non-

contagious communication and can be carried out anywhere and at any time, which makes it attractive to adult

with professional and social commitments (Holmberg, 1989)

Another Important theory to the role is the theories of Industrialization in the reflects

the attempts to view the field of distance Education as an Industrialized form of teaching

and learning. This theory developed of the academic discipline of distance education. In

relation to this study, the teacher of modular providers are responsible to explain about the

activity or lesson that the children faced difficulty to understand.

Using these theories, the teachers can apply the philosophy, purpose and achieve

serving as a guide to the students and parents to make Improve their academic

performance while at home it comes of modular learning or self-study.

SCOPE AND DELIMITATION
This study determined the factors affecting of modular learning on the academic

performance of the students. This study considers the demographic profile of the

selected Grade 11 students in Pangdan National High School in terms of Age, Grade level,

Strand/Tracked, Sex and their Academic Performance.

The study utilized a rating scale type of a questionnaire that were distributed and

limited to 84 Grade 11 student in Pangdan National High School that serve as the

respondents of this study.

DEFINITION OF TERMS
• Modular Learning- The students new way of learning that uses self-learning modules which include sections on

motivation and assessment that serve as a compete guide of both teachers and student’s desired competencies.

• Academic Performance- It pertains to the outcome of Education, that is, the extent to which a students, teachers or

institution has achieved their educational goals, which is commonly measured by examination or continuous

assessment on procedural knowledge such as skills or declarative knowledge such as facts (Tomas, II). In this study,

this term was referred to the General Average of the student-respondents for the first semester of this school year

2021-2022.
• New Normal- a current situation, social custom etc., that is different from what has

been experienced or than before but is expected to become usual or typical:

• Distance learning modality- This refers to a learning delivery modality where learning

takes place between the teacher and the learners who are geographically remote from

each other during instruction.

• Harnessing- control and make use of (natural resources), especially to produce energy.
• Emerged- Move out, of or away from something and come into view.

• Modula-ator- is an electronic circuit that superimposes a low frequency (information) signal

out a high-frequency.

• Bundy clock- is a mathematical time clock that uses a time card to record the arrival and

departure of employees at the start and end of their assigned shift.

RELATED STUDIES
According to Lev Vygotsky(2000), modular learning is a form
of distance learning that uses self-learning modules (SLM) based on
the most essential learning competencies (MELCS). The modules
include section on motivation and assessment that serve as a
complete guide of both teachers and student’s desired
competencies. Teacher will monitor the learners’ progress through
home visits. The modular approach situates Filipino students to
learn in the comfort of their homes. Limited contact with teachers
will place parents or guardians as the learners’ model or the “more
knowledgeable other” (MKO) someone has a better understanding
or higher ability level than the learner, concerning a particular task,
process or concept.
There is highly significant difference between the student’s and the
teachers assessment of the characteristics of the modules with the teachers
assessment higher than that of the students. The principle and purpose of
modular instruction, its advantages for both students and instructors, and
comparison between the conventional and modular approach are
presented. Present evidence suggests that modular instruction meets the
needs of today’s students more learning and the content, Reiser, B (2007).
The instructional cycle and intensive coaching enabled most instructors to
change their practices. Shift their focus from teaching to learning enhance
their knowledge of student learning difficulties, Gallos, M. Zagn. (2005).
Information and educational modules of the multimedia electronic textbook
require a choice of topics, a set number of hours and study times, learning
activities Seryheva & Shchitov,(2014)
METHODOLOGY
