INFORMATION LITERACY
Information and knowledge - become the engine of
economic, social, political and cultural life driven by
rapid technological growth.
Information literacy -enables people to make good use
of information and communication technology.
Critical thinking - ability to analyze, synthesize and
evaluate information means ability to think clearly
and rationally and understand the logical
connection between ideas that are presented
For example, you already have the prior
knowledge on how to recognize fake news
based on our previous lesson. Critical
thinkers will identify, analyze and solve
problems systematically rather than by
intuition or instinct. They will always seek
to determine whether the ideas,
arguments and findings represent the
entire picture.
STAGES/ELEMENTS OF INFORMATION
LITERACY
1. Identifying/recognizing information needs
2. Determining sources of information
3. Citing or searching for information
4. Analyzing and evaluating the quality of information
5. Organizing, storing or archiving information
6. Using information in an ethical, efficient and effective
way
7. Creating and communicating new knowledge
Information literate people are aware of how they
gather, use, manage, synthesize and create
information and data in an ethical manner. These
are competencies applicable to any learning
context, whether in education environment,
general work or professional environment or for
personal development.
So, when you are about to look for any
information, ask yourself the following questions:
Stages/Elements of Information Guide Questions
Literacy What do I want to find out?
Identifying/recognizing information What kind of problem am I trying to
needs solve?

Determining sources of information Do I use the internet, books or television?

Do I use primary, secondary or tertiary
Citing or searching for information

knowledge
An information literate person also knows when
to stop information search. It is impossible to
absorb all the available information.
Information literacy enables recognizing the
moment when one has gathered a sufficient
amount of information and has reached a
saturation point, meaning that new
information cannot be absorbed though there
are many other sources.
