MAP Sensor

The MAP sensor measures manifold pressure in a vehicle's engine. It is located on the intake manifold and provides instant pressure readings to the engine control unit. The ECU uses these readings to calculate air density and mass flow rate, allowing it to determine the proper fuel delivery for combustion. MAP sensors are commonly used in fuel-injected engines to help maintain optimal air-fuel ratio, emissions, fuel economy and performance.

01
Function -
The Manifold Pressure Sensor is used in an engine's electronic control system. Engines
that use a pressure sensor are typically fuel injected. The sensor provides instant
manifold pressure information to the engine's electronic control unit.

The data is used to calculate air

density and determine
the engine's air mass flow rate,
which in turn determines the
required
fuel delivery for perfect
combustion.
What is Manifold Vacuum ?
•The position of the throttle valve (controlled by the accelerator pedal) affects the
degree of vacuum.
•When the throttle is closed, creating a high vacuum, it indicates low engine load.
•When the throttle is open wider, reducing vacuum, it indicates higher engine load.
• During the intake stroke of a four-stroke engine, the intake valve opens, and the
piston moves downward, creating a partial vacuum in the intake manifold.

What is Manifold
Pressure ?
Increasing throttle opens the engine's intake system, allowing more air into the cylinders,
and consequently, increasing manifold pressure.
Manifold pressure is closely related to engine performance, efficiency, and fuel
consumption.
Manifold pressure becomes particularly significant in engines equipped with
superchargers or turbochargers.
In these forced induction systems, the goal is to increase the density of the air entering the
cylinders, thereby improving engine performance at high altitudes or under heavy load.

Location of Manifold Absolute Pressure Sensor

The MAP sensor is typically located on the intake manifold, either next to or on the
throttle body itself. (On a forced-induction engine, the MAP sensor can be found on
the intake tract before the turbo.)

05
Working Principle:
The Manifold Pressure Sensor can be used for diagnostics as it measures the throttle
performance, turbo performance and can be used to detect leaks in the inlet manifold.
Because of its position it should always read a negative pressure unless the turbo charger is
boosting pressure. This can be seen in the attached diagram.

What does a MAP sensor do on an engine?

Typically found in fuel injected engines, the manifold absolute pressure (MAP) sensor is
one of the sensors an engine control module (ECM) uses to calculate fuel injection for
optimal air-fuel ratio by continuously monitoring intake manifold pressure information.

A fully functioning MAP sensor is necessary to maintain the right combination of

acceleration, fuel economy, emissions and engine smoothness.
When the throttle is wide open and air is rushing into the intake manifold (causing a drop in
pressure), the MAP sensor signals the engine computer to send more fuel.

in the intake manifold.
Location Typically mounted on the located in the air intake
intake manifold system
Working Principle Measures pressure changes Uses a heated element to
in the intake manifold measure the cooling effect
Engine Control System Mostly often used in speed- Used in both mass airflow
density systems (MAF) and speed-density
systems
09
In some vehicles, both MAF and MAP sensors may be used
together for more precise engine control. The choice of sensor
or combination depends on the design and requirements of the
engine management system.

Common Names for the Manifold Pressure Sensor are:

•Manifold Absolute Pressure Sensor

•Engine Load Sensor
•Pressure Sensor
•Boost Sensor
