Experiment • is any planned process of data
collection.

Examples:
rolling a die
tossing a coin
drawing a marble out of jar
Outcome

• is the result of a single

trial of an experiment.

In tossing a coin = {head, tail}

Events • is a subset of the sample space. It is
set of some of the possible outcomes
to which a probability is assigned.

Examples:
1. P(getting a 2 from rolling a die)
2. P(drawing a jack from deck of cards)

3. P(getting an odd number from rolling a die)

4. P(picking a black marble from a jar)

BOX WITH LETTERS DECK OF CARDS
• Name your experiment
• Do an experiment and give your
first 5 outcomes
• Give the sample space
• Make at least 5 events

Evaluation
Ben is randomly picking numbers from a box with
numbers 1 to 20. On his first pick, he got number 17 and
on his second pick he got number 14. He also solved for
the probability of getting an even number and the
probability of getting a multiple of 5 from the box.
From this statement, give
• The name of the experiment
• Ben’s first and second outcome
• The sample space of his experiment
• The two events
Assignment
Give an example of experiment and give also its
outcomes, sample space and at least 5 examples of
its event.
