Objectives:

-Identify and analyze different types of characters

What makes you say
that ?

Watch the video and write what can you

interpret about the character and what
makes you say that .
What is
characterization?

Characterization is the way writers create

and describe a character for the reader.

There are two types of characterization:

 Direct characterization
 Indirect characterization
Direct
characterization

When writers use direct characterization in their writing,

they tell us what type of character we are reading about:

From “Ambush”:
He was a short, slender young man of about twenty

He wore black clothing and rubber sandals and a gray ammunition
belt. His shoulders were slightly stooped, his head cocked to the
side as if listening for something. He seemed at ease. He carried
his weapon in one hand, muzzle down, moving without any hurry up
the center of the trail.
The writer TOLD us DIRECTLY about how the
VietCong soldier looks like.
Indirect
characterization
Writers most often use indirect
characterization to show (not tell)
things that reveal the personality of
a character:
 The character’s speech,
 The author’s attitude when
describing the character
 The effect the character has on
others,
 The character’s actions,
 The physical “looks” of the character
These are the common
types of characters we
see in literature.

•Protagonist

•Antagonist

•Round characters

•Flat characters

•Dynamic characters

•Static characters
Round Characters
A round character refers to a character in a
fictional work with depth or a Complex personality.

This character type seems life like to readers

because they learn many details about them, such
as their history, thoughts, emotions and personality
traits
Readers see layers of characteristics , more than
one side of a personality.
•Readers see one side of a flat character.

Flat characters are two-dimensional in that they

are relatively uncomplicated and do not change
throughout the course of a work.

Flat characters are usually minor characters.

•Flat characters may be used as a contrast to a

major round character.
• A dynamic character is any character who
undergoes some kind of major change over
the course of a story, for better or worse.

• Dynamic Characters change and grow

throughout the story.

• They go from either good to bad or bad to

good.
•STATIC CHARACTERS DON’T CHANGE MUCH
AT ALL OVER THE COURSE OF THE NOVEL.
ESSENTIALLY, THEY ARE THE SAME (OR CLOSE
TO IT) AT THE END OF THE BOOK, WHEN WE
LAST SEE THEM, AS THEY ARE WHENEVER WE
FIRST MET THEM.

•Static characters stay the same and do not

develop.
