OpenStreetMap (OSM) is a free and open map of the world created through crowdsourcing. It uses an open data license and wiki format to allow volunteers to collect and edit map data for areas around the world. While Europe has many contributors, OSM is particularly useful for mapping undermapped regions. Major tech companies like Microsoft, Google, and Mapquest have begun incorporating OSM data and layers into their own map products due to OSM providing free and open map data to the public and companies. Local governments and authorities that provide data to OSM may benefit from partnering with the OSM community as they can receive map data in return to use or improve.
