Definition Cyberpunk is a postmodern science fiction genre noted for its focus on “high tech and low life.” It features advanced science, such as information technology and cybernetics, coupled with a degree of breakdown or radical change in the social order. Cyberpunk plots often center on a conflict among hackers, artificial intelligences, and megacorporations, and tend to be set in a near-future Earth, rather than the far-future settings or galactic vistas found in novels such as Isaac Asimov’s Foundation or Frank Herbert’s Dune. The settings are usually post-industrial dystopias but tend to be marked by extraordinary cultural ferment and the use of technology in ways never anticipated by its creators (“the street finds its own uses for things”). Much of the genre’s atmosphere echoes film noir, and written works in the genre often use techniques from detective fiction. As a subculture with it’s heyday in the 1990’s, it is fair to say that Cyberpunk has gradually become post cyberpunk as the scenarios often portrayed within the genre have become closer to reality - to my mind cyberpunk became mainstream.

Welcome to the Cyberpunk Archive 2023

We have discontinued our individual media lists as they were outdated and the sheer volume of new cyberpunk content has turned the envisioned operation of adding to these lists from a simple sporadic “curation archive operation” to a “live feed situation” - something we could not have foreseen back in 2013 when this site was conjured into being and cyberpunk was somewhat in a decline. There are sites out there who do a better job of individual list creation and curation, and we want to link to them here in the Cyberpunk Archive 2020 Edition.

That’s our new mission statement for this page.
