When a sidewalk is mapped separately, sidewalk=separate can be used to indicate this on the street itself. This tag has a drawback though: its presence does not unambiguously indicate whether there is a separate sidewalk on both sides or just on one side. sidewalk:both=*, sidewalk:left=*, and sidewalk:right=* can be used instead to be more specific when this information is known.
