Category:Okinawan surnames
Appearance
Surnames characteristic of the Okinawa Islands in Japan. They are often identical with surnames from mainland Japan, although their kanji and pronunciation can differ. This difference comes from the Prohibition of Yamato style name in Okinawa (ヤマトめきたる苗字の禁止) edited by Shimazu clan in 1624.[1]
Notable changes are 東 (Higashi) → 比嘉 (Hija), 船越 (Funakoshi) → 富名腰 (Funakoshi), : 中曽根 (Nakasone) → 仲宗根 (Nakasone). These name kept the same or similar pronunciation but changed the spelling in Kanji.[2]
