Gender clash.
I'm starting to realize that these Shaolin movies don't really care much for continuity for their sequels, Jet Li plays a different character from before, and it's also placed in a different setting, realizing that this series is really just about the essence of Shaolin through the history, and not necessarily a story about a specific person. In this film, Shaolin is present through the kids, it's the first time I've really seen a group of them so diligently pull off cool fighting techniques, I could tell how rigorous the training sessions must have been behind the scenes, but I'm sure it was all worth it since they really hit the mark on the moves, and goes to…
“The cow’s stupid.”
Dragon boys and girls in A̶m̶e̶r̶i̶c̶a̶ China have such a sad time together. Rival river families of Shaolin and Wu Tang must work together to combat a one-eyed warlord (echoes of The Shaolin Plot) and his army of thugs. Meanwhile, the Dads are calculating dowries in eggs and cattle. More rural comedy than its predecessor, with Jet Li playing what appears to be, a large child. The English dub doesn’t translate the children’s song at the beginning, but I think it was about farting.
Jet Li sings his heart out, falls in love, does drag, kicks ass, and even cuts a guy's dick off! Huang Qiu-Yan plays his tomboy love interest with killer sword skills and kinda steals the show. Up there with Executioners from Shaolin in the pantheon of great kung fu love stories. Also features one of the best martial arts finales I've seen in a movie, absolute weapons heaven. Unfortunately a bit weighed down by a few too many juvenile comedic moments.
This review may contain spoilers. I can handle the truth.
Funny, silly kung fu movie.
The father is so excited to finally have a son that he kisses his kid's dick.
Occasionally a musical or maybe a romantic comedy. Certainly a kid's movie. Definitely a kung fu movie. I'm sure this doesn't work as all things to all people, but it did for me.
Again rewatching a film in its original language almost always improves the experience. I rewatched this and yes, I still feel this is something a lot more people should be aware of.
The story is weird and just does its own thing. Wudan girls on one side of the river, Shaolin boys on the other. One minute fun and slapstick, the next romantic, then horrifying, the incredibly exciting and violent and then wholesome. The martial arts skill on display is remarkable, with Jet Li remaining the consistent standout. But yeah this team of actors and stunt people made this movie extremely worth checking out even without the weird as hell but super entertaining plot. Please check this out.
There's a very unhinged moment when the twins are born, but I'm pretty sure it's meant to show the character is a little off his rocker. It's edited out of the dubbed version I watched the other day. I fully get why.
It might be the weed and my genuine love of musicals and kung fu... but this might be an underrated classic.
I mean it's completely insane. And Ioved it.
Next time I watch it I'll do a proper analysis.
"Meister der Shaolin 2"
Ebenfalls schöne Kulissen, Kampfszenen und Jet li in Top Form.
From that nice time when wushu and Mainland China locations were unique and not tiresome tropes. And Jet Li didn't have a double for everything except breathing and acting.
This has a much lighter plot but its delivered much more efficiently and with a more consistent tone than the first. It’s a chance to show off the badassery of the kung fu kids and the Wudong women.
Jet Li is even less a lead player, but again that doesn’t matter. He, like all this cast, are playful yet strong. Its a delight seeing the push-pull of these rival clans who actually have affection for each other. The comedy isn’t overt so its not grating, even for those unfamiliar with Chinese humour.
All the kids are endearing even when they aren’t displaying their kung fu talents. The “serious” plot isn’t the A-Plot at all, but it is necessary to get…
An interesting twist on the Shaolin vs Wu Dang rivalry that features in many martial arts stories - or an interesting twist on star-crossed lovers like Romeo & Juliet, if you prefer.
Although not a true sequel to SHAOLIN TEMPLE (1982) it does feature many of the same faces, including a very boyish Jet Li. There is also a fresh intake that gives the film its name though.
The film feels like a throwback to an earlier era of cinema. It's... quaint. The paternalistic values are only lightly challenged, with trying to get ten cows for a daughter only being slightly criticised... mainly for being on the high side. Of course they are ultimately going to realise that it's more important…
While I do not think this film is as good as its predecessor, Kids From Shaolin is still an excellent Kung-Fu movie. Calling it a Kung-Fu movie is not entirely accurate, for it is many things. It could also be described as a Comedy film and a Romance film. The Comedy parts of this film are nice, it kept me smiling throughout. It also has a few laugh at loud moments but only a few. The romance parts of this movie are quite strong. It does a whole Romeo and Juliet two rival families thing, between one family made up of Kung-Fu boys and the other Sword carrying (or Wudang) girls. Which is a pretty fun concept, which takes a…
