Chevy Unveils 2010 Equinox Crossover SUV

2010 Chevy Equinox

Chevy just unveiled the all-new 2010 Equinox; their compact crossover SUV. The new 2010 model is a significant upgrade from 2009, both from a design standpoint and functionality. The 2010 looks a helluva lot better than the outgoing model, and promises to get a significant 25% increase in fuel economy. Although Chevy is stating that the 2010 model is “all-new,” it’s still based on the same “Theta” platform as the outgoing model. Chevy says the platform has been stiffened for 2010 – we’ll see how that works out.

The new engine is a 2.4-liter Ecotec direct-injection four cylinder which should produce 182 horsepower and achieve 24/30 mpg. Chevy drops the 3.6-liter V6 available in the 2009 for a 3.0-liter V6 that will push 255 horsepower and get around 18/25 mpg.

For 2010, Chevy also drops the Sport trim and sticks with the standard LS, LT, and LTZ models. Front- and All-wheel-drive will be available, and both engines get a six-speed automatic transmission.

Chevy says the new Equinox design was inspired from the Malibu, and bigger brother Traverse. It’s a huge improvement over the bland 2009 design, and should breathe a bit of life into the American crossover SUV offerings.

Look for the Equinox to be shown at the 2009 Detroit Auto Show, and on sale in mid-2009.
