Romney agrees to talk; union balks

GOP Senate hopeful Mitt Romney yesterday reversed his position and offered to negotiate the settlement of an Indiana labor strike, but his gesture sparked a flare-up of union and campaign charges.

With a half-dozen of the striking workers gathered outside his venture capital office at Copley Place, Romney sent word to the group that he would meet them at a motel room in Newton "to find some common ground that would break the impasse and get people back to work."

But his offer set off an angry confrontation in Copley Square with union leaders from the Massachusetts AFL-CIO and the International Paper Workers' Union, who demanded that Romney put off the meeting until …
