They're trying to sell volunteerism up the river

The people who run City Year, the 600-strong youth volunteer outfit upon which much of the new AmeriCorps has been patterned, are throwing a national volunteerism party in Columbus, Ohio, June 14-17, in hopes of dampening cynicism about youth, national service, whatever.

Good luck. They will need it. Cynicism is all the rage these days, and few things enrage the Republicans running Congress more than an example of a Clinton initiative that is idealistic, efficient and desperately needed.
