Romney leads GOP Senate hopefuls in race for funds

The Republican US Senate candidate Mitt Romney raised $456,000 in the past three months, outpacing his major competitors in the primary race to oppose Sen. Edward M. Kennedy, his aides said yesterday.

Romney's campaign yesterday issued a statement saying he raised a total of $712,000 from more than 1,500 contributors since he became an active candidate late last year.

The campaign did not list contributors or expenditures but must do so by April 15, when all federal candidates are required by law to file quarterly financial reports.

Romney, a self-made millionaire who so far has loaned his campaign about $20,000, made public his fund-raising efforts …
