World Population History

What Do We Know About Population History?

There is no way to know the population of the world in the past. But we can build models to estimate it. There were many attempts to resolve this problem. Some of results are available in our database.

History Database of the Global Environment (HYDE) is the data set developed by Netherlands Environmental Assessment Agency. They aggregated approaches developed before and build detailed estimations of world population from 10 000 B.C. till 1950.

The Atlas of World Population History by Colin McEvedy and Richard Jones  (published in 1978) contains original estimations of the world population from 10,000 B.C. till 1950 A.C. made by authors.

Professor Massimo Livi Bacci is famous Italian scientist specialized in historical demography. His books are “must read” for everyone who want to understand better world population dynamics. His estimations of earth population are included into our database as well.

Therefore you can find three different estimations of world population from 10,000 B.C. till 1950 in our database. You also can use our Chart Builder to see the world population graph from 10,000BC till now.

How Many People Leaved On Earth 2000 Years Ago?

Estimation of total population in 1 AD varies from 170 mln of people (equal to current population of Nigeria) to 252 mln (nearly equal to current population of Indonesia). Estimation of HYDE is 188 mln of people, what is something between current population of Pakistan (182 mln) and Brazil (200 mln).
