## Southbound

> Widely regarded as one of his country's finest goalkeepers, Dean Henderson signed for Crystal Palace in August 2023 after 12 years at boyhood club Manchester United.

The 26-year-old England international signed a five-year contract with the club, becoming Palace&rsquo;s third senior arrival of the 2023 summer transfer window alongside Jefferson Lerma and Matheus Fran&ccedil;a, and made his Premier League debut for the club away at Manchester City in December as the Eagles fought back from two goals down.

Like many goalkeepers before him, Henderson started as an outfield player, on the books of Carlisle United as a schoolboy.

He wasn&rsquo;t just a footballer, however, and was an accomplished enough cricketer to be noticed at county level as a wicket keeper.

Joining Manchester United as a 14-year-old, Henderson quickly rose through the ranks and was soon the Under-18s regular goalkeeper, earning a nomination for the club&rsquo;s prestigious Jimmy Murphy Young Player of the Year award.

He began to gain experience out on loan, joining first Stockport County in non-league and then Grimsby Town in League Two, before being recalled to provide cover for Manchester United&rsquo;s injury crisis.

A full season with Shrewsbury Town saw his reputation sky-rocket, and he began to feature for England&rsquo;s Under-21s side while earning a place in the PFA League One Team of the Year.

Henderson&rsquo;s move to Sheffield United on loan in 2018/19 saw the Blades secure a first promotion to the Premier League since 2007, and the &lsquo;keeper shone.

He scooped the Championship Golden Glove award (keeping 20 clean sheets), the Blades' Young Player of the Year award and the Community Player of the Year award, for his work in the local area.

It was during this season that Henderson was also called up to the senior England squad for the first time in October 2019.

Returning to Sheffield United a year later, he won the Young Player of the Year award once again, keeping 11 clean sheets as the Yorkshire side earned a historic top-half Premier League finish.

And he also made the next step up internationally, coming on at half-time for his senior Three Lions debut when he replaced Nick Pope in a 3-0 win over the Republic of Ireland in a November 2020 friendly.

After his stellar performances on loan, Henderson returned to his parent club and began to compete with David De Gea for the No. 1 spot.

He made his senior debut in the League Cup in September 2020 before making his Champions League debut just over a month later. His Premier League bow for the Red Devils came against Southampton in November as a replacement for the injured Spaniard.

Henderson made the No. 1 spot his own in De Gea&rsquo;s absence, playing 13 Premier League games and making 26 appearances overall during the 2020/21 campaign.

However, De Gea&rsquo;s return saw his first-team opportunities limited, and so another loan beckoned &ndash; this time to Nottingham Forest, where Henderson impressed once again before injury curtailed his 2022/23 season.

Now, in south London, Henderson had to wait for his chance to make his debut between the sticks as his friend and fellow England teammate Sam Johnstone impressed early on in 2023/24. Ironically, Henderson's debut came against his boyhood club Man Utd in the Carabao Cup.

He lasted only 20 minutes at Old Trafford due to a hamstring injury, however he returned to make his Premier League debut a few months later - also in Manchester, albeit against the sky blue half at the Etihad.

His first season in red and blue concluded with 19 appearances in all competitions, with five clean sheets to boot. Henderson's performances in the latter part of the campaign earned him a spot in the senior England squad which finished runners-up in the 2024 UEFA European Championship.

Over the last week, the Eagles' manager has delivered a first major trophy to South London and also seen his team move onto 52 points &ndash; a club record in the Premier League era &ndash; with one game still to play.

Speaking in the embargoed section of his pre-match press conference on Friday, Glasner was asked if he was able to stay present and allow himself a moment to take in the achievements.

"I'm always reflecting," he said. "I've already got the best appreciation I personally can have with all the happiness, with all the positivity.

"After winning the FA Cup final I got many messages from fans who had been waiting 90 years for a trophy.

"I'm always going to go to Selhurst Park and have this. So, yes, this is a moment I will always remember in my life and this is the best appreciation I can have.

"It's the same with the players, they are feeling well. We've also had players who were here, but aren't here anymore. They messaged me and are really pleased with our achievements.

"\[This season\] there's so much positive progress within the group, within the club. I'm really proud of everyone who contributed, everyone in the staff, everyone in the players' group.

"There will be, hopefully, a few days when I'm at home when I don't think about football, so I hope it's for myself because otherwise I will have really big problems with my wife and my family!"

Liverpool are Palace's final opponents on Sunday, with the Reds set for their own trophy celebrations when they get their hands on the Premier League title that they mathematically secured last month.

The two sides will meet again at the very start of next season in the traditional curtain-raiser, the Community Shield at Wembley.

Looking ahead, Glasner stated that he would be treating Palace's return to the national stadium as a hugely important fixture.

"It will be the first game of our competitive season," he added. "Of course, we'll be at Wembley again &ndash; having no game for 50 years in Wembley, then we'll have had three in the space of two months.

"And we especially want to have a clean sheet at Wembley, winning the third consecutive game there. We will take it very seriously. But of course, there's a long time to go.

"Pre-season is in five weeks, for our non-internationals so they will be ready. The others have about four weeks. Then let's see. Of course, we don't take any risks with injuries, but we will take it seriously."

With midfielder Adam Wharton out of Sunday's game but included in England's Under-21 squad for the pre-camp ahead of the forthcoming European Championships, Glasner provided a more detailed update on his condition.

"He's not allowed to do physical exercises at the moment. He has to follow the concussion protocol. He can't remember the \[FA Cup\] final.

"That means it takes a little bit longer than the usual seven days. I talked to him today, and he's still sleeping two or three hours during the day, which is completely unusual for him. That means he needs time to recover.

"So many things have happened to him in the last 18 months. Coming from Blackburn, being selected for the senior \[national\] team. Being part of the Euros squad, watching the final with England, coming back, then being injured and having surgery.

"You can't cheat your body. If you are physically tired and you don't accept it, you will get injured. If you are mentally tired and you don't accept it, you get injured because the body takes its time to rest.

"Everybody in England wants to get the best Adam Wharton he can be. We have to be very careful with the concussion protocol."

### On the response of the players to winning the Cup...

Everybody looked good today in training, of course, we're in a great mood. Everybody's laughing and maybe we didn't have the highest intensity in training, but it's also a three-game week for us - with the final, with Tuesday \[against Wolves\].

Again, huge credit to the players for how they played. Afterwards we got the stats and we were running five kilometres more than Wolves and they had 10 days to rest. We had three days after the final!

We had no training, yet more sprinting, more high intensity. It just shows the attitude and the character of this group. We're very pleased with the performance and the result.

Now we want to show it again &ndash; our standard is to show it again at Anfield, we&rsquo;re looking forward to this game.

I think when the Premier League winner meets the FA Cup winner, it's a great ending of the season. Also, big congratulations to Liverpool and Arne Slot for an amazing season and a well-deserved title. It will be a great atmosphere at Anfield.

### On a staff trip to celebrate the Cup win...

The whole staff went \[to Spain this week\], yes. We were a group of more than 30 people. It was a kind of appreciation for the staff.

Also, a big thank you to everyone. Everybody does such a great job and is working so hard to support the players. Everybody is fit and available.

Also, we're always talking about the environment and we're talking about the spirit of the training ground. It's not the grass, it's not the building - it's the people who make the environment. The people make the mood.

We're doing such an amazing job and it's just a small kind of appreciation. Going there and enjoying the time together, a lovely time together, and then go back to work again.

### On building on recent success...

If you have to wait 160 years for winning a trophy, and then you think from now we have to win it every year, then this is the wrong approach.

But yes, we want to improve step by step. I mentioned quite often, individually, as a team, as a club: it's a big chance for Crystal Palace now also to improve, because now it's the first time playing European football with a few challenges.

Not just in the squad: we don't have many players who played European football with their clubs, just a few. It's the same with the staff, it's the same with our organisation, planning all the international journeys.

It's a big chance that Crystal Palace makes the next step in their development. This is what everybody will give their best.

### On getting the players motivated for the Wolves game...

I could talk, tell and chant, hug, shout or whatever. We all depend on the players, it's just their character, just their mindset.

I think this is the mindset that has developed over months now and very often we are talking about our standard.

Regardless, if we play Wolves, we play the FA Cup final, we play, with all due respect, the first FA Cup round against Stockport County: we want to show our football. We want to show what makes us successful.

We always want to play as a team and I think this was fantastic evidence.

I saw Eddie Nketiah score two goals and how everybody is celebrating with him. We have such an amazing spirit in the group.

It's the players who did it. So, maybe it helped that I told them a very terrible personal experience &ndash; in a very similar situation, we couldn't deal with it when I was a player, we lost 6-0, and I told them the next day was not a good day. 

We want to extend this great mood here. The best is to keep winning, keep performing well. So, we will try it again and I'm really sure that everybody will give their best, then let's see how the game is going.

### On whether or not this is his best-ever season...

No, I don't think so. I think it's maybe close to the best. I always think that we can do better.

So, maybe it's close to the best after round nine! I&rsquo;m always thinking, if we could have reduced one or two mistakes in pre-season and one or two situations that happened in pre-season, then we could have done better.

We have three points after eight rounds, and then we have eight points after eight rounds. It's not really an amazing start, but there's five points more and then we are in the race for eighth and ninth.

I think these points that we lost at the beginning of the season, but especially the ones we could have avoided, we should avoid in the future.

We can't allow ourselves to lose too many points and make too many mistakes on our own, because the Premier League is just too good.

### On preparing for Liverpool, who have already won the title...

Honestly, we don't prepare like we always have done, because the players had two days off as well after the Wolves game and I think they \[Liverpool\] had a celebration again, but well deserved.

The rest is the same, analysing Liverpool. How they played at the end of the season, everybody knows. I expect they'll play their strongest team in their last home game.

Great atmosphere, and we want to be the best and hardest opposition they can have, because this is what every fan expects.

Nobody wants to see a friendly where nobody is running anymore, everybody wants to see a very competitive game, a challenging game, with the best effort, and then we will have to accept the result. We will definitely play on our best level.

I think there's no chance to disturb their party, because Liverpool played such a brilliant season and then the last home game.

I think they have a few failures as well and it's the same for us. It's just not possible, but in the end, we will definitely try to win.
