Regional Technical Platform on Green Agriculture

Green supply chain

Supply chains are responsible for 18 percent of food emissions due to the energy and resources used for processing, transport, packaging and retail, according to studies in Science and PostHarvest. Each year, around 14 percent of the food produced is lost between the harvest and retail stages, according to FAO. Green food supply chains help reduce the environmental footprint of food production and delivery while addressing food insecurity, food loss, climate change, environmental degradation and the overuse of natural resources and energy. The goal of this work area is to explore policies and practices within the supply chain and highlight why food transformation, processing, transport and distribution play significant roles in helping green agriculture transform our agrifood systems and underscore the importance of ensuring water, energy and operational efficiency.
