Question Paper

This document is a test for a 3rd year electrical engineering class on the design of electrical machines. It contains two parts: Part A with 5 short answer questions about real/apparent flux density, air gap length formulas, synchronous machine design factors, DC shunt generator output equations, and advantages/disadvantages of large number of poles. Part B contains 4 alternative long answer questions about synchronous generator dimensions with changing speed/loading, air gap flux density calculations for a water wheel generator, steps for lap/wave winding design, shunt field design procedure, and factors affecting armature length/diameter choice.

Continuous Assesment Test II

Subject code:BE 305 Subjectname:Design of Electrical Machines

Date: Duration:90minutes
Maxmarks:50 Portion:2 units
Class:III year Section:A&B

PART – A
Answer the following Questions
1. Distinguish what is real & apparent flux density?
2. In what way the air gap length influence the design of machines, write the
formula for computing the mmf for air gap length.
3. What are the factors to be considering for the separation of D&L of synchronous
machines? List the various values of L/ T used.
4. Calculate the output equation for DC shunt generator from the given data Bg
=0.89wb/m2, ac= 32000 ampcond/m, Ψ = 0.66.
5. List the advantages and disadvantages of large number of poles.

PART –B
1. The output Coefficient of 1250KVA, 300rpm, Synchronous generator is
200KVA/m3-rps.( a) Also find the value of main dimensions D,L of the machine
of length if the ratio of length to diameter is 0.2. Also calculate the value of main
dimension if (b) specific loading are decreased by 15% each with speed remaining
the same as in part (a).(c) Speed is decreased to 200rpm with specific loading
remaining the same as in part (a). Assume the same ratio of length to diameter.
Comment upon the results.
(OR)
2. A 175MVA, 20 pole water level wheel generator has the core length 1.72m and a
diameter of 6.5m. The stator slots (open) have a width of 22mm, the slot pitch
being 64mm and the air gap length at the centre of the pole is 30mm. There are 41
radial ventilating ducts each 6mm wide. The total mmf per pole is 27000A. The
mmf required for the air gap is 87% of the total mmf per pole. Estimate the
average flux density in the air gap if the field form factor is 0.7.

3. Narate the steps for design of Lap and Wave winding of the DC machines.
(OR)
4. Narate the procedure in steps for shunt field design.
