1) A 125 Watt, 230Volts, 500 r.p.m motor has a full load efficiency of 50%. Calculate
the constant losses and power developed by the armature of the motor if the sum of
iron, friction and windage losses approximately 1/3rd of total losses.
2) Calculate the diameter and length of armature for a 7.5kw, 4 pole, 1000 rpm , 200V
shunt motor , Given : full load efficiency = 0.83; maximum gap flux =0.9 wb/m 2 ;
specific electric loading = 30000 AC/m; filed form factor =0.7. Assume that the
maximum efficiency occurs at full load and the field current is 2.5% of rated current.
The pole is of square .
3) Find the main dimensions and number of poles of 37 kW,230V, 1400 rpm shunt motor
so that a square pole face is obtained. The average gap density is 0.5T an ampere
conductor/m is 22000. The ratio of pole arc to pole pitch is 0.7 and efficiency is 90%.
4) 5 Kw , 250 V, 4 pole , 1500 rpm shunt generator is designed to have a square pole
face. The loading are average flux gap =0.42 T and ampere conductor per meter
=15000. Find he main dimensions of the machine. Assume full load efficiency =0.87
and ratio of pole arc to pole pitch = 0.66.
5) A design is required for 50kW, 4 pole, 600 r.p.m. d.c shunt generator the full load
terminal voltage being 220V .If the maximum gap flux density 0.83 wb/𝑚2 and the
armature ampere conductor per meter are 30,000, calculate suitable dimensions of
armature core to give a square pole face. Assume that the full load armature voltage
drop is 3% of the rated terminal voltage and that filed current 1% of rated full load
current. Ratio of pole arc to pole pitch is 0.67.
6) Determine the main dimensions, number of poles and the length of air gap of a 600kW,
500 V, 900 r.p.m generator. Assume average gap density as 0.6 wb/𝑚2 and ampere
conductors per meter as 35000. The ration of pole arc to pole pitch is 0.75 and the
efficiency is 91% . The following are the design constraints : Peripheral speed ≯ 40
m/s frequency of the flux reversal ≯ 50Hz, current per brush arm ≯ 400A and
armature mmf per pole ≯ 7500A. The mmf require for air gap 50% of armature mmf
and gap contraction factor 1.15.
7) 50kW, 230V, 500 r.pm dc shunt motor has a square filed coil. Find its number of poles
and the main dimensions and air gap length. Assume the average gap density over the
pole arc as 0.85 Wb/m2 and ampere conductors per meter 29000. The ratio of width
of pole body to pole pitch is 0.55 and the ratio of pole pitch is 0.7. The efficiency is
91% . Assume that mmf required for air gap is 55% of armature mmf and gap
contraction factor is 1.15
8) The diameter and length of 500kw, 500 V , 455 rpm , 6 pole dc generator are 84 cm
and 35 cm respectively. If it is lap wound with 660 conductors , estimate the specific
electric loading and magnetic loadings for given machine.
9) A D.C generator rated 100kw, 50V, 750rpm. State the assumptions made and calculate
a) Main dimensions 2) peripheral speed 3) current per brush arm. Justify whether
obtained main dimension conditions satisfies the conditions of DC machines design
limitation.
10) Find the main dimension, number of poles of 50HP,230V, 1400rpm shunt motor so
that a square pole face is obtained , average flux density in the gap 0.5 W/m2 and the
amp-conductors per m are 22000. The ration of pole arc to pole pit is 0.7. Assume
efficiency of the machine as 90%.
11) Calculate the diameter and length of armature core of a 70KW, 240V, 900 rpm, 4
pole D.C shunt generator. The average flux density is 0.7 Wb/m2 and ac/m is 34000.
The ratio of core length to pole pitch is 0.8. Full load armature drop is 9.6 V and field
current is 3A.
12) A 350 Kw , 500V , 450 rpm , 6 pole DC generator is built with armature diameter
of 0.87m and core length 0.32m. The lap wound armature has 660 conductors .
Calculate the specific magnetic loading .
13) 150kW, 230V , 500 r.pm dc shunt motor has a square filed coil. Find its number of
poles and the main dimensions and air gap length . Assume the average gap density
over the pole arc as 0.85 Wb/m2 and ampere conductors per meter 29000. The ratio

,Specific electric loading =-17500 Ac/m , Ratio of gross axial length to pole pitch = 0.6,
Verify the obtained data for validation.
Problems on the field winding design
1. During the design of armature of a 1000kW, 500 V, 10 Pole, 300rpm, d.c compound
generator, following information has been obtained i) external diameter of armature
1.4m ii) gross core length 0.35m iii) Flux per pole 0.105 Wb . Based on the above
design information, findout the following details regarding the design of field system I
axial length of the pole ii) width of the pole iii) height of the pole iv) pole arc v) depth
of the yoke . Permissible loss per square meter of the cooling surface may be assumed
700 w/m2. Assume missing data asper the rating of the machine.
2. The field coils of 4 pole d.c shunt motor are required to produce an mmf of 5700A per
pole. The length of mean turn is 0.66 and the winding depth is 40mm. Heat dissipated
at the rate of 1000W/m2 of the outside cylindrical surface of the coil. Determine
dimension of the coil, size of the conductor and number of field coil turns. Assume
diameter of insulated conductor to be 0.175 m greater than the diameter of base
conductor. Resistivity =0.02𝛺 − 𝑚/mm2
3. The following are the particulars refer to the shunt filed coil for a 440V, 6 pole , d.c
generator , Mmf per pole=7000A, depth of winding 50mm, length of inner turn 1.m;
length of outer turn =1.4m ; loss radiated from outer surface excluding ends =1400
W/m2.; space factor =0.62; resistivity =0.02𝛺 − 𝑚/mm2
4. An eight pole, 500V dc shunt generator with all the filed coils connected in series
requires 5000AT/pole. If the poles are of rectangular dimension 12X20cm and winding
cross section is 12X2.5 cm determine the cross-section area of the wire. number of turns
and dissipation in W/cm2 based on the outside and tow end surfaced of the coils. The
conductor of circular cross sections used 𝜌 =0.02𝛺 − 𝑚/mm2 and insulation increases
the diameter of the conductor by 0.2mm. Allow a voltage drop in the filed regulator of
50V.
5. A shunt field coil develops an mmf of 9000A. The voltage drop in the coil is 40V, and
the resistivity of round wire used is 0.021 𝛺 − 𝑚/mm2 . The depth of the winding is
35mm approximately and the length of mean turn is 1.4m. Design a coil so that the
power dissipated is 70 W/m2 of the total coil surface. Take the diameter of the insulated
wire 0.2 mm greater than that of bare wire.
