Navaraathri is the most auspicious time for dEvee upaasanam. Japam of dhurgaa or
chandee navAkShari mantra (the 9 lettered mantra of durgA) and paaraayaN of
sapthaShathi (a text containing 700 verses) is widely practiced. In mantra shAstra,
dhurgaa sapthaShathi is highly revered. It is said that every shloka (verse) in itself is
a kalpa-vrksha, capable of fulfilling ones wishes. Following are some of the rules that
has to be adhered to in order to get benefited from the chanting of sapthaShathi :

One should have been initiated into navaakShri mantra by a Guru. Without initiation,
results might be disastarous. Also, one should have completed chanting this mantra atleast
1 lakh times (ideally 9 lakh times) before starting the PaaraayaNam of sapthaShathi.
All women young or old should be treated as ones own mother. Those who fail in this
aspect are said to earn Mothers wrath and would fall in the raurava naraka (the
cruelest of all hells) after death.
praayaSchittha thaamboolam and Guru thaamboolam should be given to braahmans
and ones own Guru (or Guru peeTas) before starting the paaraayaNam. Consumption of
Pancha gavya is highly beneficial for any sadhana. It frees us from our sins.
The paaraayaNam should be started with appropriate sankalpa and nyaasas.
Every single second is auspicious during these 9 days. Hence the mantra should be chanted
as many times as possible. The 3 sandhyaa (twilight) periods are best for paaraayaNam.
However, it is also highly auspicious to do the 4th paaraayaNam during late night (so as to
conclude just before 12O clock).
The sadhak should practice strict Celibecy in mind and body and should not sleep during day
time. Only light, sAthwik food should be partaken. Consuming only cows milk helps
attaining manthra siddhi
After the preliminary rituals and Guru-Ganapathi prayers, A lamp ignited with ghee (clarified
butter) should be installed and worshipped with jvaalaa-maalinee manthra . It is good to
have 5 wicks in the lamp. Once installed, it should not be disturbed for any reason
whatsoever until the paaraayaNam is over.
A book containing the 700 verses should be necessarily used for chanting, even if one has
memorized all of them. Without the book, the ritual wont bear fruits.
The book should be wrapped in a piece of silk cloth and should be treated sacredly. It should
never be placed on the floor or touched by others.
One should never chant while holding the book in his hands. The X shaped stand called
Vyaasa peeTam should be used.
First, the book should be worshipped by invoking the Mother into it in the form of
sapthaShathi saraswathi by the mantra:

Om namah pishaacha nikarankini thrishoola Khadga hasthE sinhaarooDhE EhyEhi,

AgaChcha AgaChcha, imAm poojAm grNha grNha swAha |

and the 5 upachaaras should be offered mentally and the Divine Mother should be
offered salutions by displaying the yOni mudrA in the forehead. It is worthwhile to note
here that the entire ritual is emotional in nature BhAva praDhAna
The sapthaShathi should never be chanted mentally. One should chant it loudly and
clearly. But the navAkShari should be chanted only mentally.
Scratching, eating, drinking, thinking about others, yawning, changing the place, shaking the
body, laughing, crying etc should not be done amidst the paaraayaNam. If due to some
reason the chanting is stopped in the middle, then shAnthi mantras and aparaadha
kShamaapana should be chanted and the paaraayaNam should be started afresh.
Chanting uthkeelana mantra 21 times, chandika shApOdDhAra mantra 7 times and the
navAkShari 108 times at the beginning and at the end of each chapter is highly beneficial.
The following sankalpa should be uttered at the beginning of each chapter:
mama iSta sidDhi prathibanDhaka dhOSha nivrthyarTham pATAdau thaThA pATAnthE
Ekavinshathi vAram uthkeelana mantram, sapthavAram chadikA shapOdDhAra mantram
taThA ashTOththara vAram navArNa manthra japam aham kariShyE ||
15. At the end of every chapter, kSheera tharpaNam (milk oblations) should be given
with the moola manthra, over a lemon held in the right hand with ardha yOni mudrA.
THE WORD ITHI SHOULD NOT BE UTTERED WHILE CONCLUDING A CHAPTER. INSTEAD
SWASTHI SHOULD BE USED. For example: swasthi shree mArkanDEya purANE soorya
sAvarNikE manvantharE, dhEvee mAhAthmyE, maDhu-kaiTabha vaDhO nAma
praThamODhyAyah | shree jagadhambaarpaNamasthu || .

R.Srinath
These are some of the Chandi Parayana Bhedas that are found in sampradayas. The
upasakas are requested to take up this method ONLY AFTER GETTING DULY INITIATED BY
SADGURU.
Nityachandi Parayana:
Parayana should be started on suklapaksha chaturdasi. Every day the sapthasati parayana
should be done with shad-angas. The parayana should be continued for complete 1 month.
This is Nitya chandi.
Navadurga Vidhana:
The parayana should be started on Ashtami tithi of Sukla Paksha. The parayana should
continue for 7 days. From Ashtami to Dwadasi, the sadhaka should do the parayana daily
once. On Trayodasi, parayana of sapthasati should be done twice ie., once in Morning and
again taking rest for some time one should do the parayana again but before sunset. This
same method should continue on chaturdasi also. So, on the whole, there would be 9
parayanas. This is Navadurga Vidhana.
Kalaratri vidhana:
The process is same as Navadurga Vidhana but the parayana should be started on Krishna
Paksha. The Parayana should be done in mornings not in night. Some get confused by the
name Kalaratri to be midnight. This is not so.

Avruti Parayana:
As per the samkalpa, there may be more than one parayana in a single day but the
parayana of shad-angas alongwith Sapthasati Malamantra Nyasa should be done only once
during the 1st parayana itself. Rest of the parayanas can be continued without these angas.
Mahavidya Parayana:
The sapthasati parayana in the order of Prathama (1), Madhyama (2) and Uttama (3) charita
is Mahavidya. This is done for Santi karma.
Mahatantra Parayana:
The parayana in the order of 1, 3, 2 charitas is Mahatantra vidhana
Chandi Vidhana:
The parayana in the order of 2, 3, 1 charitas. This is for Poushtika Karma
Sapthasati vidhana:
The parayana in the order of 2, 1, 3 charitas. This prayoga is for SammOhana.
Mritasanjivini Vidhana:
The parayana in the order of 3, 1, 2 charitas. This is for apa-mrityu nivarana, visha jwara
nivarana.
Mahachandi:
The parayana in the order of 3,2,1 charitas. This is for Ucchatana.
Rupa Chandi Vidhana:
The samputikarana of the entire 700 slokas with Navakshari Mahamantra, Rupam Dehi
Jayam Dehi Yasho Dehi Dwisho Jahi (the last sloka from Argala stotra). This is Rupa Chandi
Vidhana. This is for Mano Vancha Siddhi.
Chatushshashti Vidhana:
Before the 1st chapter and at the end of the 13th chapter the Names of 64 Yoginis should be
added as samputikarana. This is Chatushshashti Vidhana done for Yoga Siddhi.
Para chandi vidhana:
Samputikarana of the Bija SAUH with every sloka of Sapthasati (700 slokas) is Para Chandi
Vidhana. This is Moksha Pradayini.
Navadurga Vidhana:
The Bala Mantra alongwith the 9 names viz., Jaya, Vijaya, Bhadra, Bhadrakali, Sumukhi,

Durmukhi, Prajna, Vyaghramukhi, Simhamukhi should be done as samputikarana to every

sloka of Sapthasati. This is for manovancha siddhi.
Mahavidya Vidhana:
The samputikarana of Sapthasati alongwith Ratri Sukta (pouranika from 1st chapter). This is
Mahavidya Vidhana.
Mahayantra Vidhana:
The samputikarana of the stuti of 4th chapter (slokas starting from 2nd to 22nd ) with
sapthasati is Mahayantra vidhana.
Mahasapthasati Vidhana:
The parayana in the order of Argala, Kilaka, Kavacha, All the 13 chapters and Uttaranga. This
order is Mahasapthasati vidhana.
Mritasanjivini:
The slokas of 10th chapter starting from tatah prasannam akhilam.shAnta
digjanitahsvanAh is the Mritasanjivini Vidya. Because all the devatas and jivas were saved
from the ruthless demon Shumbha. This generates the Prana Shakti in the Upasaka. Hence,
the samputikarana of these vidya with Sapthsati is called Mritasanjivini Vidhana.
Mahachandi vidhana:
The samputikarana of the Sapthasathi with Pouranika Devi Sukta is called Mahachandi
Vidhana.
Chatushpadi vidhana:
The Stotra Chatushtaya (Ratri sukta, the stuti from 4th chapter, Devi sukta and Narayani
Stuti) is called Chatushpadi. The samputikarana with Sapthasati is called Chatushpadi
Vidhana.
Srishti Krama Vidhana:
The parayana of Sapthasati in the order of 1st chapter to 13 chapter is Srishti Krama \
Anuloma Krama Vidhana. This confers prosperity, progeny etc.
Sthiti Krama
Parayana with 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10 chapters and then 1, 2, 3 chapters and then 11, 12, 13
chapters is Sthiti Parayana. This is for Santi Karma.
Samhara Krama / Viloma Krama:
The parayana is started from the Last Sloka of 13th chapter and should be continued in
reverse order till 1st sloka of 1st chapter. This is Samhara \ Viloma Krama. This is for
reverting back misfortunes and any accidents.

There are some pATha bhEdAs in Samhara Krama.

Adhyaya Viloma: The order of the parayana is from 13, 12, 11, .1 st chapter. The order of
the slokas are intact.
Sloka Viloma: The order of the parayana is from the Last Sloka of the till the 1st sloka of 1st
chapter.
Pada viloma : This is a form of Sloka viloma but the words are chanted in reverse order.
Akshara Viloma: In this form, the entire letters are reversed starting from the last letter of
the last sloka of 13 chapter and this process continues till the last letter of the 1st sloka of
the 1st chapter.
With regards,
Sriram
Namah Chandikayai
Doing Chandi Homa by yourself is a very difficult Technical job as you may see from the
procedures and rituals prescribed in the Nirnaya Sagar publication .( it involves atleast ten
parayana prior to homa -- you should be familiar with all the nyasas, the poorvanga part
involves Ganesha puja -- sankalpa -- Punyavaachan,anugna -- Gruhapreethi -- Dasa pancha
Dhani --Nandi and vaishnav shrad -- kalashasthapan --sthapan of various dities,Chandi
avarana puja--agni prathishtan -- Mukantam -- ganapathy homa, navagraha homa - Devi
Avahanam in the Homagni--pradahna Homa with 700 mantras-- bali-- arahnadi upachara
puja as per bhavaopanishad-- Purnahuti and uttaranga procedures etc-- kumari puja -suvasni puja -- to put this in a nut shell.)
At every stage one must be able to fluently recite the elaborate Vedic mantras associated
with each of the ritual and procedure -- and should know what has to be offered to Devi at
the end of each chapter of Saptha Sathi homa -- to give you an example at the end of first
chapter you should offer to Devi in the agni -- Black saree and blouse with Vlam phal ( in
Tamil it is known as vilampazam ) apart from all types of dry fruits- white mustard-- one
sweet --flowers -- bangles-- coconut etc etc which is common to all chapters -- the second
chapter the ahuti consists of Red blouse and full arecnut and at the end of third chapter it is
red saree with red blouse with honey ---- It goes on like this.
The mail covers the main puja and I hope the Sadhak is familiar with the preliminary
porvanga sankalpa etc etc and hence not repeated

" Jai Bhavani " - - - - " Jai Sri Lalitha Maha Maha Tripura Sundari "

Lord Ganesha (elephant faced God) is always worshipped before starting any
Pooja or Homa. Lord Ganesha removes all obstacles. Lord Ganesha is also known as
Vigneshwara [vigna + Eswara] which means the lord who removes all obstructions
(Vighna).
There are many mantras to propitiate Lord Ganesha. By and large there are 56
different postures and mantras for Lord Vinayaka. In Shilpa sastra, all the 56
positions are described elaborately.

The following Ganapathy Homas are performed generally by many even now.

Ganapathy

Homa.

Maha Ganapathy Homa

Vallabha

Ganapathy Homa

Lakshmi

Ganapathy Homa.

Vancha Kalpalatha Ganapathy Homa (based on the system of Sri Vidya)

Uchishta Ganapathy Homa
Sankata-hara Chathurthi Homa (performed in the evening of Krishna Chathurthi
Day The thithi Chathurthi in the evening).
Ganapathy Homa should be performed in the early morning and Poornahuthi to be
offered during sunrise, unless any other time is specifically mentioned to suit the
particular purpose.
There are two ways of performing Homas, Vedic and Tantra.
In the Vedic way of Homa, all rituals are performed as per Vedic texts. In tantra,
sometimes Vama prayog is also done to safeguard the native from enemies and

adversaries. It also produces adverse effect on enemies Normally only Vedic way of
Homas are performed.
To perform Ganapathy Homa the following materials are essential.
Ghee, Modhaka (a kind of sweet prepared with coconut, gur and rice flour or wheat
flour), durva (a kind of grass).

Mahaganapathy Homa is performed with Ashta Dravya (a mixture of eight

materials) 1.Coconut, 2.Banana, 3.Honey, 4.Sugarcane, 5.Ghee, 6.Modhaka,
7.Jaggery, 8.Puffed rice.
In Sankatahara Chathurthi Homa, apart from ghee, we can use all varieties of
flowers, fruits, sweets, etc., which may count upto 108 dravyas (materials) except
tulsi leaf.
Note: Tulsi leaf should not be offered to Ganapathy.
Ganapathyatharvashirsha is in praise of Lord Ganesha.
(Please refer Shri Mahaganapathya Atharva seersham) This mantra is recited
normally while performing Ganapathy Homa. The benefits of the mantras are
described in these last three mantras.
By chanting these mantras, one can live peacefully, without any hindrance. He who
wants to become a good orator should do Abhishekam to Lord Vinayaka with this
mantra. A man in need should perform Homa by durva (A kind of grass). A man
seeking good memory and reputation should do Homa with puffed paddy. He who
desires prosperity should perform Homa with 1000 modakha. He who performs
Ganapathy Homa with ghee and samit (a kind of branch of tree) will get everything
he desires. During Solar eclipse if one recites these mantra in the bank of a holy
river or in front of an idol of Ganapathy, the mantra will become sidha to him.
After that he will not face any hindrance and all his sins will be washed off. All his
desires will be fulfilled. This is what of Veda and Upanishad say.
If any one is running Ketu dasa or bhukti or there is some dosha of Ketu in the
horoscope, he can perform Ganapathy Homa and get-relief.
Ganapathy Homa should be performed on all auspicious occasions. Performing
Ganapathy Homa once every year will give prosperity, health and wealth.
Ganapathy Homa should be done on Shukla Chathurthi day of Bhadrapad i.e. the
birth day of Lord Ganesha.
