Introduction to Systems
This lesson will introduce to students the different methods of solving and learning
systems of equations. Along the lesson, images and videos will be provided, so
students could see and listen to how some of these methods could be applied to
getting a solution. In addition, different kinds of questions will be given to students.
Why would I provide different questions?
Graphing Method
1. When attempting a problem using the graphing method, make sure each
equation this is given is in __________________.
2. After you have put both equations in slope intercept from, ________ each
equation.
3. Lastly, when you plot both points and you____________________, this is your
solution.
Further Understanding
A) While working with the graphing method, what happens when the lines are
parallel? Do you get a solution? If so, then is it equivalent to the one that was
found using the graphing technique?
B) What if the lines on the graph were equal? In other words, what if the lines
overlapped each other? What does this mean? Could it be possible to have
the same solution twice?
Substitution Method
1. Begin with solving one equation for one variable. (i.e. = = )
2. Then, __________ this expression (either = = ) into the other equation and
solve for the missing variable.
3. Next, substitute the answer into the _____________ and solve.
4. Finally, check the solution.
Questions to ask Yourself
I) Note: As you are working out the problem, make sure that you do the last
step, which is check the solution because many times you will find an
answer, but when you check it, you will find out that there is no solution.
How do you feel about this note?
II) If you decide to choose the variable y instead of x (or vice versa), then will
you get the same solution?
III) Do you think if you found no solution for the substitution method, then
you could find success with the graphing method?
Elimination Method
I. Start off by ordering the equations with like terms in columns.
II. Then, _________ the coefficients of x or y, and multiply one or both equations
by an appropriate number to obtain new coefficients that are___________.
III. Next, ____________________ and solve for the remaining variable.
IV. Lastly, substitute the value into either equation and solve. Remember to
check the solution!
Checking for Understanding
A) Is it possible to do some problems quicker than the steps provided? If so, then
will this affect the solution the problem?
B) What does it mean to you if you work out a problem and you end up with
0=0. Could you graph this outcome? If so, then how would it look?
