Statement of Purpose

Faculty : Petroleum and Petrochemical College

Major : Petrochemical Technology

During my study in chemical engineering I deeply curious about the energy and its

technology especially the renewable energy. In the last semester of my study I have also done

my final plant design project about the renewable energy with the title “ Prelminary Design

Plant of Bio-methane Production Derived from POME (Palm Oil Mill Effluent) with capacity

of 1000 tons/year). Since the begining of this project I have identified myself dan I have been

interested about bio-energy production that is environmentally clean and can be utilized

continuously. In the other hand, the existance of fosil fuel in my country that progressively

diminish has attracted me the most. While, the demand of the energy in every sector is always

increase over the time such as industries fuel requirement, tranportation, electricity powerplant,

and even household needed. The big number of energy demand is caused by developing of

technology which can not be prevented. The solution of this problem is just to find the other

energy that can subtitute the fosil energy and sustainablity. One of the alternative energy that

can be used is biohydrogen.

Biohydrogen as the alternative energy to cover fosil energy, I found that it is really

challenging to learn how to produce biohydrogen from the big amount of biomass in Indonesia.

Biohydrogen as the green energy has many advantages compered to the other type of energy.

Biohydrogen is the very clean and more efficient energy resource. That gas has the highest

energy content (143Gjton-1) per unit and it is a fuel that is not chemically bonded to carbon

(Purwanto, 2005). Thus, combustion of hydrogen will not cause the greenhouse effect, ozone

layer depletion, or acid rain. This is because the combustion process in the air will only produce

water vapor and heat energy (Nath and Das, 2004). So, it is a chance for me to learn more about
biohydrogen and the other green energy for helping our life in the next future. I have shearched

that PPC has the very strong major about renewable energy and technology that is

Petrochemical Technology. I do believe with this opportunity, I can learn a lot from PPC and

bring a new knowledge for energy research and its development. We know that Indonesia is

one of the countries that has various types of biomass, this condition will help me to build and

apply my knowledge after I graduated from PPC somedays.

When I studied in chemical engineering UII, I always gave my focus on energy

development. I tried to read many books and refferences about the new generation of energy,

such as biohydrogen, biomethane, biodiesel, biofuel, and bio-oil. I also really curious about the

fossil fuel impact to our environment. That is way I want to know a lot about green energy that

produce from biomass. During my study in chemical engineering I have done three researches

with my proffesor here. The first is about bio-oil from pinecone, the second and the third is

about CO2 emission produced by the building electricity consumption. In fifth semester, I done

my internship in Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources Of The Republic Indonesia

(PPSDM MIGAS), there I learnt how to design a plant and run the control system. It was also

about energy. In the last semester after I joined exchange student program in PPC, I also had a

chance to win a national bio-energy competition in my country. I just know, it was the best

moment for me to show that we need to bring bioenergy in the first line to subtitute the fossil

energy. That reasons above I think enough for me to continue my master degree in

Petrochemical Technology PPC.

Afterwards, I have some plans during my master degree in PPC and after graduate.

First, I want to learn more about renewable energy and its improvement especially the

biohydrogen including its impact to our environment, how to minimize the emission that

occured cause the fuel emission and the return by using the green energy such as biohydrogen.

I also want to do the research about this issue. I hope with the knowledge that I bring from my
last study and combine with learning in PPC, I can do the best research in bio-energy. Second,

I hope I can join a beautiful travel to some industries in Thailand about Petrochemical

Technology, so I can learn more in the field and becoming the professional engineer somedays.

Third, I want to learn more about Thai language and their cultures. As I said before that I have

ever joined PPC exchange program in the last semester, somehow I know a little bit about Thai

language. Otherwise, I want to improve my Thai language skill and all Thailand cultures in

order to can adapt well. I wish with this opportunity will strenghten the relationship between

Indonesia and Thailand in all sectors.

After graduation, I plan to be a lecturer or a teacher in some university in my country.

I want to share what I get from PPC to my students later, I think if we share the good thing we

will also get better, beside that I really like to be a teacher even when I studied in UII I have a

part time job as a school teacher and university laboratory asistant. I also plan to be a researcher

on bio-energy field, I want what knowledge I get have a benefit to my country by doing some

research. If I have a chance I will also continue my study to the next level and become a

proffesor or an expert on bio-energy field especially biohydrogen.

Furthermore, I am a person who wants to work hard and learn a lot. So, I will not

waste the opportunity that you given to me as a part of ASEAN Scholarship Program in PPC,

Chulalongkorn University. I will give my best effort and the best way during my master degree

program in PPC. Thank you very much.

Kind Regard,

(Ariya Eka Alel)
