Sample: Observations: Infrences: A

This lab report details an experiment using the flame test to identify different cations. Five samples labeled A through E were each placed in a petri dish and rolled onto a nichrome wire, which was then placed in a non-luminous Bunsen flame. The color of each flame was observed and recorded, allowing the experimenters to infer which cation was present in each sample based on the flame color produced. Sodium produced a bright yellow-orange flame, barium a pale green flame, potassium a brief lilac flame, calcium an orange-red flame, and copper a lasting blue-green flame.

Title: Qualitative Analysis: Flame Test

Aim: To identify cations using the flame test.

Apparatus: Nichrome wire, non-luminous Bunsen flame and Petri dishes,

Materials: Sulphuric acid and samples of cations (A-E).

Procedure:

1. Each sample was obtained and placed in an individual petri dish.

2. Nichrome wire was cleaned with Sulphuric acid (H2SO4).
3. The wire was rolled in sample A.
4. The wire was then placed directly into the flame.
5. The colour of the flame was observed and recorded.
6. Steps 3-6 were repeated for the remaining samples [B-E].
Results:

SAMPLE: OBSERVATIONS: INFRENCES:

+
A Sample A was a grey, lustrous Na Cation Present
solid. When the sample was
subjected to flames, an intense,
Lasting, yellow-orange flame
was observed.
B Sample B appeared to be white Ba2+ Cation Present
and powdery. When this sample
was subjected to flames, a very
pale green flame was seen.
C Sample C was observed as white K+ Cation Present
pellets. When they were
subjected to flames, a slight,
fleeting lilac flame was
observed.
D Sample D was a white Ca2+ Cation Present
crystalline solid. When this
sample was subjected to flames
a bright orange-red flame was
produced.
E Sample E was a light blue Cu2+ Cation Present
powder. When it was subjected
to flames, a medium, lasting
blue-green flame was produced.
