Bio Lab#5 - Population Size

This experiment aims to investigate if a decrease in fish populations in a village was caused by overfishing. The experiment will involve lowering a net into the water at increasing depths and times over multiple days to capture and tag fish. After 6 months, the experiment will be repeated to compare the number of fish captured and calculate any changes in the population size over time. It is expected that after 6 months, the fish population will have increased due to reproduction.

Title: Population size

Problem Statement: A fishing village noticed a recent decline in the number of fish being
caught. This decline has affected businesses and fish scales in the area. Plan and design an
experiment to determine the population size of fish in the area.

Hypothesis: Overfishing in area can lead to critical depensation, where the fish population is no
longer able to sustain itself.

Aim: To investigate if the decrease in fishes is caused by overfishing in the village.

Apparatus: Fish bowl, net, tags

Procedure:

1. On day 1, lower the fish net 50m deep into the water and allow it to stand between 1 – 2
hours. Raise the net and tag the fishes that were caught and place them back into the
water.
2. On day 2, lower the fish net 100m deep into the water and allow it to stand for 2 hours.
Raise the net and tag the fishes that have not been tagged and place them back into the
water.
3. On day 3, lower the fish net 150m deep into the water and allow it to stand for 3 hours.
Raise the net and tag the fishes that have not been tagged and place them back into the
water.
4. On day 4, lower the fish net 200m deep into the water and allow it to stand for 4 hours.
Raise the net and tag the fishes that have not been tagged and place them back into the
water.
5. Repeat steps 1 – 4 for 4 more days.
6. After 6 months, repeat steps 1 – 4.
7. Observe and compare the number of fishes in each phase and calculate the percentage
increase and decrease in a suitable table.
Data Collection:

Day/s Fishes tagged Fishes recaptured % Increase or

decrease
1
2
3
4
5
6
7
8

Variables:

Manipulated: Time net spent in water, length of net

Controlled: Fishes were not tagged twice

Responsive: Number of fishes that were captured and tagged

Expected results: It is expected that after 6 months, the fish population should increase due to
reproduction and the larvae’s would be able to develop.

Limitation: Fishes may die
