LP Sentence Pattern

This lesson plan aims to teach students about basic sentence patterns. It will begin with a game to motivate students by having them arrange scrambled sentences. The teacher will then explain that sentences need structure or patterns to be grammatically correct, just as problems need solutions. The five basic sentence patterns will be defined and examples given for each: subject-verb, subject-verb-direct object, subject-verb-direct object-object complement, subject-verb-indirect object-direct object, and subject-linking verb-complement. Students will then practice identifying the pattern for sample sentences and discuss the importance of understanding patterns. Finally, they will be evaluated by writing the pattern for additional sentences.

B. Developmental Activities

a. Motivation
The teacher will facilitate a game in the class entitled “Scrambled sentence”.
Mechanics of the game:
1. The teacher will divide the class into three groups.
2. The teacher will give them scrambled sentence written on flashcards which
they will arrange by writing at the back of the flashcards and paste them on the
board.
3. They have 3 minutes to put the words in the correct order to make sentences.
4. The fastest group to arrange the scrambled sentence will declare as the
winning group.

b. Presentation of the Lesson

The teacher will tell the class that in order to arrange a certain problem,
we need to have a solution and every solution has a format or pattern just like
in sentences that we need also to have pattern in order for us to construct a
good and correct sentence especially when we are writing essays or
communicating with other people.

c. Discussion

The teacher will discuss the following:


Sentence is a group of words that has a complete thought. There are two
parts of a sentence, the subject and the predicate.

BASIC SENTENCE PATTERN


1. Subject -Intransitive Verb (S-IV) Pattern
In this pattern, the verb is not followed by a noun or pronoun
complement and is often modified by an adverb. Only an adverb can
follow the intransitive verb.
Example:
S V S V
Kiko ran fast. Kiko ran fast.

2. Subject-Transitive Verb-Direct Object (S-TV-DO) Pattern


A direct object is usually defined as a noun or pronoun that follows
an action verb (transitive) and answers the question what or whom about
the subject and verb.
In this pattern, a sentence may have more than one direct object.
Direct Object receives the action of the verb or shows the result of the
action. They cannot follow forms of the verb be or linking verb.
Example:
S TV DO
My father bought a new car.
S TV DO
Kristine found her keys and opened the door.

3. Subject-Transitive Verb-Direct Object-Object Complement (S-TV-


DO-OC) Pattern
The object complement is either a noun that tells what the direct
object is, or an adjective that describes the direct object.
Only certain verbs can function in this sentence pattern. These
verbs are appoint, believe, call, choose, consider, declare, elect, find,
make, name, support, think, vote and want.

Example:
S TV DO OC
The president appointed my uncle executive secretary.
S TV DO OC
Mel wants her steak well grilled.

4. Subject-Transitive Verb-Indirect Object- Direct Object (S-TV-IO-DO)


Pattern
An indirect object is a noun or pronoun that answers the question
to what? for what? to whom? or for whom? about the subject, verb, and
direct object.

Example:
S TV IO DO
Luz gave the school her trophy.
S TV IO DO
Carla left the mail for him.
5. Subject-Linking Verb- Complement (S-LV-C) Pattern
A complement noun, pronoun or adjective that follows a linking
verb and explains and identifies the subject of the sentence.

Example:
S LV C-n.
The woman was an astronaut.
S LV C-adj.
She is beautiful.
S LV C-pr.
There is someone inside the room

d. Guided Practice
Directions: Identify what pattern is used in each of the following sentences.

1. Scientists are intelligent and brave.


2. The pillowcases have holes in them.
3. Diana likes to join the Glee Club.
4. My friend gave the office party a bad name.
5. He told her no.
6. My father is he.
7. The teachers are strict.
8. The moon is smaller than the earth
9. The teacher gave the class a difficult test.
10. Claudine sings sweetly.

e. Generalization
The teacher will ask the following question to the students:
1. What is the importance of a sentence pattern?

IV. Evaluation
Directions: Write the correct pattern used in each of the following sentences. Write
the pattern on the blank (S-IV, S-LV-C, S-TV-DO, S-TV-IO-DO, S-TV-DO-OC)
