Delivery service - FedEx


Route/locations - Rogers, MN to Valley Forge PA.
1. Distances and time between the locations – 981.28 miles

2. Role that each leg of the journey plays (e.g. pick-up, line haul, delivery, etc.). –
• At first the order is placed and pick up the usually done by city trucks which is very
essential part to assure safety.
• Line haul is necessary to guide and route the parcels to their exact location. There are
always thousand of parcels to be delivered every day and proper tracking and guiding is
necessary which is taken care by this part.
• Order delivery is last stage to assure timely service and maintain

3. Mode of transportation that is likely used- Intermodal
• Road transport – City truck, line haul (load trucks)
• Railways – train

4. Routing between origin and destination -


• First shipment order placed (for example in morning)
• Order picked up after 6 hrs (same evening)
• Order arrived at FedEx location in 2 hrs in rogers.
• Order left the hub after 7-8 hrs
• Order reached in mid location (Hagerstown) after 2 days 14 hrs.
• Kept there for 6 hrs and they departed for next location/hub.
• After 8-9 hrs order reached the destination city North wales.
• After 3-4 hrs order left with FedEx truck to deliver to the location
• Order delivered in 4-5 hrs to the main location.
This complete process takes 3-4 days

5. Efficiency of the routing – the company usually chose this routing because it is fuel efficient and
also saves the time. Intermodal is one of the effective ways to ship in bulk and as fast as possible.
Airfreight can be used but that won’t be cost effective although it will save time. City truck service
in first and last step are effective within the city as it saves time, while train service is effective for
more than 700 miles distance. This proves to be more fuel efficient
6. Any areas of difficulty. -As per my understanding what I have observed that the haul timing is bit
long between first and second location. While at this location it is sometimes not easy to track all
the parcel and to guide them to exact location is a tedious work
7. Learning- this assignment was very helpful in knowing the complete process of delivery services
from starting to end point. How efficiently they use different kinds of transport to ensure that the
package receives with as fast as possible and simultaneously keeping in mind the fact that the fuel
cost as well as other cost should be minimal.
