Ethical Delemma
• Discuss the following scenarios:
Case A: A customer asked for a product. After telling
him of the price, he said he can’t afford it. You know
he can get it cheaper from your competitors. Should
you tell him?
Case B: “A” told “B” that he (A) plans to quit.
Meanwhile the boss told “B” that he is not going to
be promoted because “A” is the candidate. “A” & “B”
joint the company at the same time. Should “B” tells
“A” of the news?

 What is ethics? The study of right and


wrong, duty and obligation, moral norms,
individual character, and responsibility.

Moral Versus Nonmoral Standards

 Nonmoral standards: Standards about


behavior or practices with no serious or
immediate effects upon human well-being.
 Moral standards: Standards about behavior
or practices with serious or immediate
effects upon human well-being.
Some Features of Moral Standards

Moral standards take priority over non-


moral standards.
The soundness or validity of moral
standards depend on the quality of the
arguments or the reasoning that support
them.
Non-moral Standard
• Society is governed by:
– Values
• Are the relatively permanent and deeply held desires of
individual
– Norms
• Are rules and patterns of behavior that are accepted
and expected by members of the society/team
– Etiquettes
• The customs or rules (unwritten code of practice)
governing behavior regarded as correct or acceptable in
social or official life
Morality and Etiquette
 Rules of etiquette are non-moral in character
and are meant to serve as guidelines for
socially acceptable behavior.
 Violations of etiquette can sometimes have
moral implications.
 The strict observance of rules of etiquette can
sometimes conceal serious moral issues.
