study and analyze the lessons carefully, do and enjoy the exercises and activities
inserted and finally answer the Post Test.

After going through this module, you are expected to:

1. define and differentiate percentage, rate and base;

2. identify what is the percentage, rate and base in the given problem;
3. solve mathematical problem where percentage, rate or base is missing;
4. construct simple problem regarding the topic; and
5. value the essence of the given topic in real life.

The corona virus disease (COVID-19) is an infectious disease caused by a new strain of corona virus. This new virus and
disease were unknown before the outbreak began in Wuhan, China, in December 2019.

On January 30 2020, the Philippine Department of Health reported the first case of COVID-19 in the country with a 38-
year-old female Chinese national. On 7 March, the first local transmission of COVID-19 was confirmed. WHO is working
closely with the Department of Health in responding to the COVID-19 outbreak.

Activity 2: Study the given table above and answer the following:
1. How many confirmed cases are in Brgy. Tunasan? ______________________________
2. How many confirmed cases are in Brgy. Sucat? _________________________________
3. How many confirmed cases are in District 1? ___________________________________
4. How many confirmed cases are in District 2? ___________________________________
5. How many more confirmed cases are in District 1 to District 2? ___________________

What Is It

S.Y. 2020-2021

Percents are ratio of a number and 100. So they are easier to compare than fractions,
as they always have the same denominator, 100. A store may have a 10% off sale. The
amount saved is always the same portion or fraction of the price, but a higher price means
more money is taken off. Interest rates on a saving account work in the same way. The more
money you put in your account, the more money you get in interest. It’s helpful to
understand how these percents are calculated.

Mr. Mendoza has a coupon at the Guitar Store for 15% off any purchase of Php
1000 or more. He wants to buy a used guitar that has a price tag of Php 1000 on it.
Mr. Mendoza wonders how much money the coupon will take off the original
1000 price.

Parts of a Percent Problem

 The rate has the percent symbol (%) or the word “percent.” In the problem above,
15% is the rate.
 The base is the whole amount. In the problem above, the whole price of the guitar is
1000, which is the base.
 The percentage is the number that relates to the percent. It is always part of the
whole. In the problem above, the percentage is unknown.

Example: 30% of 20 is 6

6 is the percentage
30% is the rate

20 is the base

Activity 3: Identify the percentage(P), rate(R) and base(B) of the following:

1. 90% of 30 is 27.
P =_____________ R =_____________ B =_________________
2. 15 is 30% of 50.
P =_____________ R =_____________ B =_________________
3. 25% of 8 is 2.
P =_____________ R =_____________ B =_________________

How to solve for the missing part of the percent problem?

B R Percentage: Base x Rate

Percentage
Base = Rate

Percentage
Rate = Base

Examples: (refer to table in Activity 2)

A. What percentage of the total confirmed cases of Muntinlupa City are from Tunasan?

Since B and P are given therefore

Rate(R) is missing. There are 2,165 confirmed cases
in Muntinlupa City as of August There are 254 cases in Brgy.
Note: Rate(R) is with percentage 12,2020. (total) Tunasan (part of the total)
(%) sign
B = 2,165 P = 254

Given: P = 254 B = 2,165 R = _____

P
Formula: R =
B

254
Solution: R =
2,165
R = .1173
Convert it to Percentage: 11.73%
Final Answer: 11.73%

B. Muntinlupa City was recognized by the DILG and DOH as the top City in NCR in
dealing with COVID 19 pandemic. According to them Muntinlupa recovery rate is 63.83%. Do
you agree? Can you prove that the recovery rate of Muntinlupa as of August 12,2020 is
63.83%?

Given: Total Number of cases: 2,165 Recovery Rate: 63.83%

B = 2,165 R = 63.83% = 0.6383

7|Page Note: Rate is the part of the problem
Note: Your key word to determine
the Base is the word Total with % sign. Don't forget to convert
it to decimal.
Muntinlupa Science High School

S.Y. 2020-2021

Since Percentage is missing, then we will use the formula P = R X B

Solution:
P = 2,165 x 0.6383
P = 1,381.92 or 1,382 (Round it to the nearest whole number since we are talking about people)
Final Answer: The data posted is correct since according to it, there are 1,382 recovered
patients or 63.83% recovery rate.

C. If there are 68,997 recovered patients with 47.998% recovery rate (as of August
12,2020) in the Philippines, how many confirmed cases do we have?

Given: P = 68,997 (part of the whole)

R = 47.9982% = 0.479982
B = _________________
P
Formula: B =
R

68,997
Solution: B =
0.479982

B = 143,749.1 or 143,749
FINAL ANSWER: 143,749

What’s More
Study the following and solve. Supply the missing number by writing the correct answer in
the space provided.

1. ___________ of 50 is 45. 2. _____________ of 90 is 36.

3. 80% of 50 is ____________ 4. 65% of 20 is ____________

5. 60% of ________________ is 30. 6. 35% of ____________ is 14.
