Answer all questions in Part I and ten questions from Part II, choosing four questions
from Section A, three questions from Section B and three questions from Section C.
All working, including rough work, should be done on the same sheet as, and adjacent to,
the rest of the answer.

PART I (20 Marks)
Answer all questions.
Question 1 [5]
A. Choose the correct alternative (a), (b), (c) or (d) for each of the questions given below:
(i) A charged particle q is placed at the center O of the cube (ABCDEFGH) of length L.

(ii) The equivalent resistance between points a and b of a network shown in the Figure 2 is given
by:

(iii) An iron rod of length L and magnetic moment M is bent in the form of a semicircle. Now its
new magnetic moment will be:
(v) If Ep and Ek represents potential and kinetic energies of the orbital electron, then

(ii) A resistance R is connected across a cell of emf e, and internal resistance r. A
potentiometer now measures the potential difference the terminals of the cell as V.
State the expression for r in terms of e, V and R.
(iii) Two identical cells of negligible internal resistance are connected (a) in series ,
(b) in parallel with each other. Find the ratio of currents through a load resistance R
in the two cases.
(iv) How will the angle of dip vary when one goes from a place , where the acceleration
due to gravity is maximum, to a place where it is minimum, on the surface of the earth ?
(v) An average induced emf of 0.4 V appears in a coil when the current in it is
changed from 10 A to 10 A in opposite direction in 0.40 sec. Find the coefficient
of self induction of the coil.
(vi) Draw the shape of the reflected wavefront when a plane wavefront is incident normally
on a convex mirror on its polished surface.
(vii) A Plane wavefront, in air is incident on air-water interface and the corresponding refracted
wavefront in water as shown in Figure 4. Express the refractive index of water with
respect to air, in terms of the dimensions shown in Figure 4.

(viii) A monochromatic ray of light falls on a 600 prism under minimum deviation condition.
Write the relation between angles of incidence and emergence.
(ix) What kind of lens one should use to correct long- sightedness of eye?
(x) Three lenses with magnification 2,3and 10 form a combination. What is its
total magnification?
(xi) Show graphically the variation of de-Broglie wavelength (λ) with the accelerating
potential (V) , for an electron initially at rest.
(xii) The first line of the Lyman , Paschen and Balmer series , in hydrogen spectrum are denoted
by λL , λP , λB respectively. Arrange these wavelengths in increasing order.
(xiii) What will be the ratio of the radii of two nuclei of mass numbers A1 and A2
(xiv) Arrange α- rays, β- rays and γ-rays in the increasing order of their penetration.

(xv) In the following circuit, if the waveform is shown in the Figure 5, what will be
the output waveform across R.

(Answer any four questions)
Question 2
(a) Obtain the expression for intensity of electric field at a point on equatorial line of an
electric dipole. [3]
(b) Two positive charges of 10 µC each are situated 10 cm apart from each other.
What is the increase in the electrostatic potential energy of the system when the two
charges are brought closer by 2 cm. [2]

(a) A capacitor of capacitances, C1 = 1.0 µF withstands the maximum voltage, V1(max) = 6.0 KV
while another capacitance, C2 = 2.0 µF withstands the maximum voltage, V2(max) = 4.0 KV.
What maximum voltage will the system of these two capacitors withstand if they are
connected in series? [3]
(b) Is current density a vector or a scalar quantity? How does the current density in a
conductor vary with [2]
(1) Increase in Potential gradient and
(2) Increase in Temperature.

(a) In a circuit shown in Figure 6, a voltmeter reads 30 V , when connected across 400 ohm [3]
resistance. Calculate what the same voltmeter will read, when connected across the
300 ohm resistance?

(ii) Why should the materials used for making permanent magnets have high coercivity?

(a) Two coaxial circular loops L1 and L2 of radii 3 cm and 4 cm are placed as shown in Figure 8.
What should be the magnitude of the current in the loop L2 so that the net magnetic field at the
point O be zero? [3]

(a) An electric lamp which runs at 60V-10W is to be run on 100V- 60Hz mains. [3]
(i) Calculate the inductance of the choke required.
(ii) If a resistor is to be used in place of choke coil to achieve the same result,
calculate its value.
(b) In an A.C. generator , an armature coil consists of 20 turns of wire, each of area 0.09 m2 and total
resistance 15 Ω. It rotates in a magnetic field of 0.5 Tesla at a constant frequency of (150/п) Hz.
Calculate the value of:
(i) Maximum induced emf and
(ii) Average induced emf produced in the coil in each rotation.

(a) Prove the law of reflection of light on basis of Huygens wave theory of light. [3]

(b) Find the ratio of intensities of two points P and Q on a screen in a Young’s double slit
experiment when waves from S1 and S2 have phase difference of (i) п/3 and
(ii) п/2 respectively. [2]
Question 9
(a) Laser light of wavelength 630 nm incident on a pair of slits produces an interference pattern
in which the bright fringes are separated by 8.1 mm. A second light produces an
interference pattern in which the fringes are separated by 7.2 mm.
Calculate the wavelength of the second light. [2]
(b) (i) A slit of width “a” is illuminated by red light of wavelength 650 nm as shown in Figure 9.
Calculate the value of “a” for which the first minimum will be located at point P? [2]

(ii) Sketch graphically the intensity distribution in a single – slit diffraction pattern. Label the
axis. [1]
Question 10
(a) An object is placed at a distance of 15 cm from a convex lens of focal length 10 cm as shown in
Figure 10. On the other side of the lens, a convex mirror is placed such that its distance , from the
lens, equals the focal length of the lens. The image is formed by this combination is observed to
coincide with the object itself. Find the focal length of the convex mirror. [3]

(b) A small object is 2 cm below the concave meniscus of water in a test tube. [2]
The radius of the meniscus is 5mm and µ for water is 4/3. Find the nature and
position of the image.

(a) A compound microscope with an objective of 1 cm focal length and an eyepiece [2]
of 2 cm focal length has a tube length of 20 cm. Calculate the magnifying power
of the microscope , if the final image is formed at the near point of the eye.
(b) Draw the ray diagram for the formation of image by a refracting telescope having the
final image formed at infinity. State the formula for angular magnification for the same
for image formed at infinity. [3]

(a) In an experiment of photoelectric effect, the graph between the maximum kinetic energy E K
of the emitted photoelectrons and the frequency ν of the incident light is a straight line as
shown in Figure 11 . Calculate: [3]

(b) de- Broglie wavelength of electrons of kinetic energy E is λ. What will be its value if kinetic

Question 13
(a) State the postulates of Bohr’s theory of hydrogen atom. Hence derive the expression
for the radius of the nth orbit of hydrogen atom using Bohr’s postulates. [4]
(b) State Moseley’s law for line emission spectrum of characteristic X- rays. [1]
Question 14
(a) Draw a labeled sketch to illustrate pair production. [2]
(b) Define half life of a radioactive substance. Establish a relation between half – life T1/2
and decay constant λ starting from N = N0 e-λt . [3]

(a) Explain, with the help of a diagram, how the depletion layer is formed in a
p-n junction diode. [2]
