SSP Research Topic 4

This document provides guidance on developing a research title and statement of the problem. It begins by outlining what the reader should be able to do after reviewing the module, including creating a good research title and constructing the statement of the problem. It then provides tips for writing an effective title, such as making it short, clear, and descriptive of the research problem. The document also outlines the steps for defining a research problem, including selecting an area and topic, identifying the sources and reasons for the current problem, and answering any questions raised. Sample problem statements are provided along with a post-assessment to check the reader's understanding.

Lesson
Writing the Title
3.1
A research paper title page is the first page of your research paper. It is essential to come up with
a title page that gives the readers an overview of the research. It should also be structured in a way that
gives it a professional outlook.

What is a good title?

The title summarizes the main idea or ideas of your study. A good title contains the fewest possible words
that adequately describe the contents and/or purpose of your research paper.
How to create a good title?
 A good title predicts the content.
 It will catch the interest and attention of the reader
 Reflect the tone of the paper of writing
 Should be short as possible
 Should be clear to describe the research problem
 Should be distinguishes the problem from other related issues
 Should be accurate and concise
 Specific language should be used
 It should be containing key words that make easy to access by computer search
 Avoid using abbreviations
 Is limited to 10 to 15 substantive words.
 Do not include "study of," "analysis of" or similar constructions.
 Use correct grammar and capitalization with all first words and last words capitalized, including
the first word of a subtitle. All nouns, pronouns, verbs, adjectives, and adverbs that appear
between the first and last words of the title are also capitalized.

Here are some steps you can follow to write an effective title:
1. Answer the questions: What is my paper about? What techniques / designs were used? Who/what
is studied? What were the results?
a. My paper studies about whether X therapy improves the brain/cognitive function of
patients suffering from dementia (memory loss)
b. It was a randomize trial
c. I studied 40 cases from six cities in Japan
d. There was an improvement in the cognitive function of patients

2. Use your answers to list keywords

a. X therapy
b. Randomized trial
c. Dementia
d. Six Japanese cities
e. 40 cases
f. Improve cognitive function
3. From the list of keywords, you can then build or create your title by combining them.

Lesson
Statement of the Problem
3.2
A statement of the problem is used in research work as a claim that outlines the problem addressed by a study.
The statement of the problem briefly addresses the question: What is the problem that the research will address?
What is a Research Problem?
A research problem is any new issue or problem which arise in the specific community of population or in the
study. It can also be a statement about in concern area, or a condition to be improved, or difficulty or problem to
be eliminated, or an existing question in the literature.
Steps in defining research problems
a. Selecting of Area
b. Selection of the Topic
c. Sources of the current problem
d. Defining the instruments are used
e. Methodology
f. Reason of the problem
g. Answering the raised questions

(a.) Selecting Area

 Select the specific area for the investigation of the problem
 Handle the specific problem in a specific area (e.g. Laboratory, City Hall, Road, etc.)
 It is a general area for investigation
(b.) Selection of the Topic
 Select the topic that you have interest in it.
 First introduce the topic.
 Topic must be specific
 You must be having well knowledge about the topic
(c.) Sources of the current problem
 Understand the source from where you define the problem
 To know the specific community or population where the problem arises
 Study the risk factors and pathogenicity(cause) of problem
 Also study other factors which help in developing of the problem
(d.) Defining the Instruments are used:
 Arranged all the instruments which are used during experiment
 We estimate that what kinds of instruments should be used.
 Mention the names of the instruments you are using
 Just use specific instruments related to the problem
(e.) Methodology
 Mention the name of method that you are using during experiment for the elimination of
the problem
 Also mention the names of all the materials that are used during the experiment

(f.) Reason of the problem

 at the end of the research, mention of the result of your problem
 present the main reason of the problem
 mention the causative agent of the problem
(g.) Raise questions
 Answering all the question that are arising from the existing problem during experiment
or after research
 Answering all “ W ” questions…
 What?
 Why?
 When?
 Where?
 Who?
Research question(s)
1. Be clear and specific.
2. State the focus of investigation in the research.
3. Not be answerable with a yes/no response.

What are the components of problem statement?

Problem statements often have three elements:
A. the problem itself, stated clearly and with enough contextual detail to establish why it is important;
B. the method of solving the problem, often stated as a claim or a working thesis;
C. the purpose, statement of objective and scope of the document the writer is preparing.
