Introductory Message
Welcome to Science 7!

The Learning Activity Sheet is a product of the collaborative efforts of the

Schools Division of Sipalay and DepEd Regional Office VI - Western Visayas through
the Curriculum and Learning Management Division (CLMD). This is developed to
guide the learning facilitators (teachers, parents and responsible adults) in helping the
learners meet the standards set by the K to 12 Basic Education Curriculum.

The Learning Activity Sheet is self-directed instructional materials aimed to

guide the learners in accomplishing activities at their own pace and time using the
contextualized resources in the community. This will also assist the learners in
acquiring the lifelong learning skills, knowledge and attitudes for productivity and
employment.

For learning facilitator:

The Science 7 Activity Sheet will help you facilitate the leaching-learning
activities specified in each Most Essential Learning Competency (MELC) with minimal
or no face-to-face encounter between you and learner. This will be made available to
the learners with the references/links to ease the independent learning.

For the learner:

The Science 7 Activity Sheet is developed to help you continue learning even
if you are not in school. This learning material provides you with meaningful and
engaging activities for independent learning. Being an active learner, carefully read
and understand the instructions then perform the activities and answer the
assessments. This will be returned to your facilitator on the agreed schedule.

SCIENCE 7 ACTIVITY SHEET NO. 5

Colors and Intensity of Light

I. Learning Competency with Code

Explain the color and intensity of light in terms of its wave characteristics.
(S7LT-IIIf-10)

II. Background Information for Learners

Have you seen a rainbow? When can you see a rainbow?

A rainbow is a band of colors formed in the sky. This results when sunlight hits
droplets of water which acts as tiny prisms separating sunlight into bands of colors as
seen in the figure below.
.

Figure 1. Colors of the rainbow

What are these colors that you often see in a rainbow? What determines the
intensity of these colors of light?

In this learning activity, you will be able to explain the colors and intensity of
light in terms of its wave characteristics.

III. Accompanying DepEd Textbook and Educational Sites

234). Pasig City: Department of Education.
IV. Activity Proper

Activity 1.
Directions: The diagram below shows the separation of white light into different
colors as it hits the prism. Study the diagram and answer the questions that follow.
Write your answer on a separate sheet of paper.

Figure 2. White light as it passes through a prism

1. What color bent in a wider angle?

2. What color bent at a narrower angle?

_________________________________________________________

3. What are the component colors of a white light?

_________________________________________________________

Light is made up of wavelengths, and each wavelength is a particular color. The color
you see is a result of which wavelengths are reflected to your eyes.

Activity 2.
Directions:. To understand more about the characteristics of the different colors of light,
study the table below. Write your answer on a separate sheet of paper.

Characteristics of the color of light.

Color Energy (eV) Frequency Wavelength Speed (frequency x
( Hz or/s) (nanometer) wavelength) m/s
Red 1.91 4.62 650 3x108
Orange 2.06 5.00 600 3x108
Yellow 2.14 5.16 580 3x108
Green 2.25 5.45 550 3x108
Blue 2.48 5.99 500 3x108
Indigo 2.75 6.66 450 3x108
Violet 3.10 7.50 400 3x108

7. What can you say about the relationship of the characteristics of waves in terms of
energy, frequency, and wavelength for each color?
___________________________________________________________________
___________________________________________________________________

The color of visible light depends on its wavelength. Each color has a
different wavelength. Red has the longest wavelength, and violet has the
shortest wavelength. When all the waves are seen together, they make white light.

In humans, light wavelength is associated with perception of color. Within the

visible spectrum, your experience of red is associated with longer wavelengths, greens
are intermediate, blues and violets are shorter in wavelength. (An easy way to
remember this is the mnemonic ROYGBIV: red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo,
violet.) What do you think is the relationship of amplitude of the wave to its color?

The amplitude of light waves is associated with your experience of brightness

or intensity of color, with larger amplitudes appearing brighter.

Both light and sound can be described in terms of wave forms with physical
characteristics like amplitude, wavelength, and energy. Wavelength and frequency are
inversely related so that longer waves have lower frequencies, and shorter waves
have higher frequencies. In the visual system, a light wave’s wavelength is generally
associated with color, and its amplitude is associated with brightness.
