person or animal, is like. The purpose of this text is to
decsribe and reveal a particular person or animal. It is
mostly about sensory experience like how something
looks, sounds and shapes.
b. Social Functions
 To describe a person or an animal in a specific way.
 To give information to the readers some
characteristics or features of a person or animals.
c. Generic Structures
 Identification
Identifies of matter will be described.
 Description
Describes or explains personality,
qualities, or characteristics.
d. Language Features
 Focus on specific participants as the main character.
 Mostly use present tenses.
 Use linking verbs or relational process frequently (e.g.
is, are, has, have, belongs to) in order to classify and
describe appearance or qualitiesand parts or function
of phenomena.
 Use action verbs or material process and behavioural
process in giving additional description regarding
action and behaviour done by the participants in
text. (e.g. run, play, write, knock, dance, read).
 Use mental verb or mental process when describing
feelings. (e.g. think, decide, reflect, consider)
 Frequently use nominal group.
 Use adjective and adverbs to add information to
nouns
 Add information to verbs to provide more detailed
description about the topic.
 Use adverbial phrases to add more information about
manner, place, or time and sometimes realized
inembedded clause which functions as
circumstances. (e.g. any time, at home, quite
interesting, every morning)

2. Eksploring Descriptive Text 2 (Things and Places)


a. Definition
Desciptive text Thinks and Places are a meaningful text
that describes and reveals particular Thing or Place. The
purpose of the text is to give a visual picture of a thing
and places.

b. Social Function
 To give detailed information about a particular
entity by describing its features, history, and
special characteristics.
 To give information about things by describing
physical attributes, behaviors, uses,etc.

c. Generic Structure

Identification : introduces and identifies specific objects


(a person, thing, place, animal, or event) intended to be
described.
Description : describes the intended objects using
descriptive details or information about the objects’
characteristics, appearances, personality, habits, or
qualities.
The structures between writen description and sopken
description are different.

d. Language Features
 Specific participant : it has a certain object, is not
common and unique (only one).
 The use of simple present tense: because it tells the
fact of the objectdescribed.
 The use of the adjective (an adjective) to clarify the
noun.(exp: beautiful, good, smart, strong etc…)
 Action verb: verbs that show an activity(exp: clap,
climb, jump,push, hit etc…)
 Using passive voice
 Using noun phrase
 Using general and abstract noun
 Using conjucntion of time, cause and affect
 Using some technical terms.
3. Exploring Report Text 1 (Classifying Report and
Compositional Report)

a. Definition
Report text is a text which presents information about
something, as it is. It is as a result of systematic
observation and analyses. This text organize our
experiences of the world for us, they are used to record,
organize, and store information relating to categories of
things. Classifying Report and compositional report text
are concerned with general categories of things rather
than events and happenings and with informing about
technical and specific topic. The purpose of the text is to
organize and describe a field or topic into a class and
subclass hierarchy.

b. Social Functions

 Classifying report to organize and describe a field or


topic into a class and subclass hierarchy
 Compositional report organize and describe a field or
topic according to its part (a part or whole part)

c. Generic Structures
 Opening general statement/general cassification
locating what is being talked about in the universe of
things. It often takes the form of a classification or
definition. Sometimes the opening statement may
also indicate a particular aspect of the topic that is
being treated.
 Description
This part gives a facts about the focus of the report
text. It has function to describe features of the
subject. Each aspect might be elaborated by
refereeing to distinctive characteristics of the
subject(color, shape, habits, behavior, etc…), or by
giving examples, or by comparing, contrasting and
classifying, or by describing components and their
function.

d. Language Features

which it is

4. Exploring Report Text 2 (Comparative Report and
Historical Report)
a. Definition
 Report text are concerned with general categories of
things rather than events and happenings and with
informing about technical and scientific topics. The
purpose of the text is to organize and describe a field
or topic into a class or subclasses hierarchy.
Moreover, it can be used to organize and describe a
field or topic according to its part (a part or whole
part)

b. Social Functions
 Comparative report to identify the similarities and
differences between two or more classes or things.
 Historical report to give information about the way
things were in relation to a particular historical
period or site.

c. Generic Structures
1. Comparative Report
 General Statement: It introduce entities to be
compared.
 Description : It contains the systematic and
analysis of similarities and differences.
2. Historical Reports
 General Statement : It identifies historical
period or site and it defines and locates in time
and place.
