The pandemic due to the deadly coronavirus disease (COVID-19) has adversely affected the livelihood of most
Filipino households and along with that, the quality of education of students as the pandemic provoked a
widespread closure of establishments’ services enterprises schools and universities across the country. Due to the
governments' protective measures against COVID-19, the face-to-face classes for this school year will not resume.
However, the Department of Education (DepEd) responds to the pandemic by implementing online education for
the students and teachers despite the ongoing uncertainties. Many Filipino families struggle to give the necessary
materials needed for their child's online education, as many people lost their jobs and sources of income. Students
are also already facing difficulties and challenges at home during the pandemic. So what more will happen to them
as they navigate through online learning? Thus, an academic freeze is an intense debate circulating in our society.
Academic freeze refers to the cancellation of formal schooling and the academic calendar across all levels amid the
COVID-19 crisis in the country. The DepEd said that they push through online learning as they want the youngsters
of our generation to be able to learn since the moment they stop, it will have a massive impact on their lives.
Indeed, it will have an enormous effect on their lives as permitting an academic freeze may also cause them to
forget what they have learned in the last school years. In this paper, I want to open the reader's minds and further
explore why academic freeze should be considered during these unprecedented times. I firmly believe that an
academic freeze is vital when there is a pandemic. Suppose the government is not considering a pause of
education for this school year because they reasoned that it would lead to students becoming ignorant. However,
even in online education, many students complain that they cannot focus on and understand the lessons given
Because of distractions and a lack of connection with the teachers, there is a lack of face-to-face communication in
online learning due to classes in zoom or Google meet. Lack of communication is face to face with the instructor
disrupts student response. This causes social isolation and reduces pressure due to students not being face to face.
Reduction in pressure is a kind of loss, and it causes students to leave their studies quickly. Thus, they do not gain
knowledge, information, and skills through online learning, resulting in students being ignorant due to experience
and skills not being developed. If face-to-face classes do not happen, neither should online education as students
should only have quality education sticking to tacky methods that do not fully optimize and ensure that the
student is given the best attention and environment needed for optimal learning is a waste of resources for the
government and the normal Filipino household especially since at this time families are still struggling to persevere
despite the lack of income due to the pandemic. According to the studies, social engagement makes students five
times more engaged and motivated in learning. Since it shows that when students do not have anyone to ask for
help in studying, they start to lose interest in education. But with no interactions between the students and the
teachers, makes online learning ineffective. With online classes being useless, there are no reasons for it to be
continued further the government should just pour out their resources to COVID response or ensure that every
student has resources like gadgets and Wi-Fi to participate in online learning
