Section 1 Outline

1. 1 Outline
The EML201 Series electromagnetic log conforms to the technical requirements for the
performance standard determined by IMO Resolution A478 (XII) and also meets type approval
issued by the Transport Ministry of Japan (Type Approval No.2560).
Its principle of operation is the same as that of our ordinary electromagnetic logs to
assure high accuracy and reliability, and has the following features:

(1) Small size and light Weight compared with ordinary Models

(2) Full provision of various external interfaces

• Pulse output (photocoupler/contact)
• Digital output (RS422)
• Analog speed output (0 to 5V DC)

(3) Reduction in the number of parts by the employment of highly integrated circuits
including microprocessor, and has no moving parts, thereby achieving high relia-
bility.

(4) Provision of digital speed/distance display unit which displays selectively spe-
ed and distance.

(5) Full provision of various sensors to meet various requirements.

(6) Provision of self-diagnostic function.

1. 2 Princple of Measurement

.The electromagnetic log operates on Faraday's electromagnetic

induction law. When a conductor and a magnetic field are in relative
motion, an electromotive force is induced in the conductor. The
direction of magnetic field, direction of motion and direction of
electromotive force are at right angles to one another, and if the
magnetic field remains constant, the magnitude of electromotive force
is in proportion to the velocity of motion (see Figure 1-2). This
electromotive force is generated if either the conductor or magnetic
field is in motion. With the electromagnetic log, an electromotive
force is produced by the magnetic field which moves along with the
ship through sea water which is presumed to be at rest. A sensing
element provided at the tip of the measuring rod has a coil. When
this coil is excited, a magnetic field is produced around the sensing
element. The electromotive for sensor which is induced as the ship
moves is taken out via a pair of electrodes installed in the tip of
the sensing element (see Figure 1-3). IM80B80T03E

Input signal after filter-processed is converted to speed output. A 1st-order lag
filter is used and its time constant becomes a function of the rate of speed cha-
nge as shown in the following diagram.
Thus, the input signal can respond to large change quickly in a small time const-
ant , and to a small change slowly over a large time constant.
Increase in the numeric value set by the setting switch (SW7) makes response spe-
ed slow, while decrease in a numeric value set by the setting switch (SW7)
makes response speed fast.

5.2 Milepost Calibration (MODEs 3 to 6)

When the ship runs with the electromagnetic log actually equipped, water flow acting
against the sensor on the measuring rod varies with the sensor installation position,
••.
ship form, a amount of sensor projection from the ship bottom, the draft and ship spe-
d. Therefofo, in order to obtain accurate indication, it is necessary to perform the
specified error adjustment by comparing the indicated speed with the actual speed af-
ter installation. For actual ship speed measurement the ship can run a known distance
on a quiet and flawless see, but in reality since actual speed is influenced by curr-
ent flow and wind, making a round trip between mileposts eliminates the above influe-
nce. For a trip between the mileposts, it is necessary to reduce speed change as much
as possible during the travel between mileposts, and also to make correct travel in
the direction specified by the mileposts.
Foe milepost calibration, 1 round trip (2 trips) and one and a half round trips
(3 trips)are set as measurement units(pair) in order to eliminate current flow.There-
fore, the average actual ship speed and average log speed are obtained from the above
mean values.

(1) 2 passages (2) 3 passages

Two trips are recommended when the Three passages are recommended when the
effect of current flow and wind is effect of current flow and wind changes
constant with respect to time. in proportion to time.

6. 5 Sensor mounting cautions

(1) Mount the sensor so that the ship stem and stem line mark correctly faces in the
stem direction.
The sensor is punched with a hole indicating the stem direction.
(2) For sensor stick prevention, the sensor is inserted into the ship bottom valve
with grease applied.
However, do not apply excessive grease since it may adhere to the electrode.
This may cause incorrect indication.
(3) When removing the sensor from the ship bottom valve, extracting the sensor too
far out before the valve is closed may allow sea water through the valve.
Prevent excessive sensor removal by using a chain for the single bottom mounting
type (HSl, HVl)
When removing the chain, conduct it after closing the valve completely.
Also for the double bottom through type (HDl), caution marks are engraved at 50mm
and lOOmm locations from sensor end. Therefore, stop the sensor when the lower
mark (50 mm) is observed, and then close the valve. The upper mark at the 100 mm
position is only for estimation purposes.
