What is It

Freedom (Kalayaan) in a traditional sense, is synonymous to liberty or

independence. In a democratic society, this term is often used as the right of a
person to do whatever he/she pleases to do, for as long as his/her conduct or
actions are within the bounds set by law. In present society freedom is associated
with freedom of expression where people can express themselves through different
media, such as art, fashion sense of clothing, and even in terms of body tattoos and
piercings.

Freedom is also associated with the freedom of speech which serves as

right for an individual to openly criticize or affirm the actions of the people around
him/her. This freedom fuels a person to comment on the conduct of a certain
official in the government and even the government itself. Such freedom even
extends to social media where anyone can freely express his/her opinions about
almost anything. However, the objectives of philosophy is not to magnify such
freedom enjoyed by the people, but so simply put certain limits of the said freedom
within proper perspective.

Freedom is an intrinsic and essential property of the person!

“This means that the human person by nature is a FREE BEING, and that it
is in his or her nature to seek wisdom.”

Where does freedom rooted?

Self-determination “The ability or power to make decisions for yourself,

especially the power of a nation to decide how it will be governed, ’the ability to
BECOME.”

Exercise of intellect “The process to manifest his or her ideas and

aspirations.”

Free will “The ability to decide what to do independently of any outside

influence”

Kinds of freedom

1. Physical Freedom -refers to the absence of any physical restraint. The

person is free move wherever he or she goes.

2. Psychological Freedom -is also called as FREEDOM OF CHOICE. The

person performs actions that he considers right and wise.

3. Moral Freedom -refers to as FREEDOM IN MANNER that upholds

human dignity and goodness. The person is not an object of other’s freedom.
Two Elements of Freedom

Voluntariness -It refers to the ability of a person to act out his or her free
will and self-determination.

-It means that a person may decide to act or not to act, and these decisions
are made out of his or her own free will.

-It also means that a person may act even if he or she is not required or
called to take action.

Responsibility -It refers to the person being accountable for his or her
actions and consequences. As a free being, the person must accept the
consequences of his or her action and take responsibility for them.

-Voluntariness and responsibility go hand in-hand in determining a person’s

freedom. In any situation where a person is forced to do an action against his or
her will, it follows that he or she cannot be held responsible for his or her
involuntary actions.

We can therefore examine our actions, habits, and behaviour by asking

ourselves the following questions:

1. What should I do?

2. Why should I do it?
3. What will happen if I do it?
4. How will my actions or behavior affect myself, others, and my
surroundings?
5. Will my actions or behavior be considered correct, proper, beneficial,
and moral?

Freedom and Existentialism

Existentialism is a kind of philosophy that highlights human existence,

human freedom, and choice. It argues that one must define his/her meaning in life
and make rational decisions.

The core of this philosophy is anchored on the question of human existence.

It holds that a person was thrown into nothingness and fro him/her to counter
such state, he/she must embrace his/her existence. Existentialist believe that a
person is free and should take full responsibility for his/her own doings.

Known existentialist Jean-Paul Sartre explore the true meaning of freedom

and in what way a person can achieve such. With due reference to a person’s
consciousness, freedom is viewed simply as the ability to choose. Sartre also claims
that a person is not an object, but is a subject. This valuing of human nature
ensures one of his/her dignity, derived from his/her freedom of choice.
Determinism and Freewill

It is the philosophical proposition that every event, including decision and

action, is causal determined by an unbroken chain of prior occurrences.
Biological determinism- behaviour influence by biological forces like
genes, hormones and evolution.
Environmental determinism- behaviour controlled by features of the
environment. Example: Skinner- conditioning (phobias)
Psychic determinism - behaviour controlled by unconscious conflict.
Example: Freudian- ID, ego, superego (psychosexual stages)
Scientific emphasis on casual explanations – science is based on the idea
and cause and effect, being able to make predictions.

Choices (Pagpili) and Consequences (Kinahihinatnan)

All our actions (Spoken or Physical) have consequences. Some are good
(positive) and some are bad (negative). Consequences are result or an effect.

“Lahat ng bagay na ating gagawin ay may kaakibat na pananagutan”

“If, however, it is true that existence is prior to essence, man is responsible

for what he is. Thus, the first effect of existentialism is that it puts every man
passion of himself as he is, and places that entire responsibility for his existence
squarely upon his own shoulders. And, when we say that man is responsible for
himself, we do not mean that he is responsible only for his own individuality, but
that he is responsible for all men”
-Jean-Paul Sartre, Existentialism is a Humanism (1946)

Demonstrating Prudence in all Choices

Prudence (matalinong pagpapasya) is an act of making good judgement that
allows a person to avoid risks. It is important to be prudent at all times to prevent
any harm that a decision may cause.
In making a decision, it is critical to determine the adverse effects
beforehand to avoid greater risk. Exercising prudence in choice implies that one
has already criticized all available options, and well-thought-of choice has been
made.

Activity 1.1 Actions and Consequences

What is the message of the picture? Write your reflection about this picture.

2. What factors made you come up with that decision?

all of them are great prizes. However, if you will weigh the pros and cons of each,
you will easily realize that one may be better than the other.
