Natsci Week 1

Physical cleaning products work through chemical reactions and energy transfers. Common household cleaners contain ingredients like sodium hypochlorite in bleach, citric acid in fruits, and surfactants in detergents. These active ingredients help remove stains, odors and germs through their chemical properties. Users should carefully read labels and follow guidelines to safely use cleaning products and avoid harm. Precautions like proper ventilation, protective equipment and avoiding chemical mixtures help ensure safe cleaning.

WHAT’S IN
Activity 1.1
Chemical reaction occurs when there is enough energy between reactants and creates products.
The reaction can increase or decrease temperature which is one of the reasons that cleaning
household products can burn skin or cause irritation.

1. What are the things you already know about the following concepts?

 If your skin is delicate, even a light cleaning can dry it out and aggravate it. When used as
indicated, most household cleaning products and insecticides are rather safe. The toxicity of
a product is determined by the amount of product used (never use more than the amount
listed on the label).

2. In what way will the following concepts be useful in understanding how chemical
household cleaning products works effectively. Give a possible explanation.
a. Energy
 Laundry detergent generates chemical energy. This energy is produced by the composition
of the soap or detergent, as well as the way the detergent's ingredients interact with the
stain on our shirt. Chemical energy, provided by the soap or detergent.

b. Chemical reactions

 By safely and effectively removing soils, germs, and other contaminants, they help to keep
us healthy by preventing the spread of infectious diseases and controlling allergens such as
dust and mold.

Activity 1.2 Fruity Agents
Direction:
Aside from being our food, give the other use of these fruits/vegetables.
Explain why these fruits/vegetables could be useful as cleaning materials or agents.

antibacterial qualities, is one of the greatest natural
cleaners.
3. Papaya It can also act as a stain remover. Grass stains, egg
stains, and other protein-based stains are easily
removed.
4. Tomatoes Tomatoes acidity makes it a good cleaner for copper and
silver. It's also inexpensive and natural.
