Activity No. 2 Egg-Cellent Earth I. Objective

This document describes an activity where students model the structure of the Earth using a hard boiled egg. Students crack the eggshell to represent the Earth's crust and outer layers. They then cut the egg in half to reveal the yolk in the center representing the Earth's core. By comparing a cut egg to images of the Earth's internal layers, students identify how each part of the egg maps to a layer inside our planet, such as the yolk representing the Earth's iron-nickel core. In small groups, students then discuss alternative models for visualizing the Earth's structure and note the pros and cons of different analogies.

Activity No. 2
Egg-Cellent Earth
I. Objective:
Describe the eggshell and identify what part of the earth the eggshell represents.
II. Materials:
- hard-boiled egg paper plate
- plastic knife marker
III. Procedures:
1. Crack the eggshell by gently rolling the egg against the table.
a. describe the appearance of the eggshell

b. What are the parts of the earth the broken eggshell represents?
_________________________________________________________________________
2. Carefully cut the egg in half.
3. Mark the center of the yolk with a dot using a marker.
c. Which parts of the Earth interior are modelled by the cut egg?
_________________________________________________________________________.
d. Describe how the model demonstrates characteristics of these layers.

_______________________________________________________________________.
4. Make an annotated sketch with actual parts of the egg labelled on the left side and the layers of
the Earth they represent on the other side.
5. Display (project a transparency of)a cross section of the Earth’s layers to compare with the egg
model.
6. Complete the table by identify the similarities and differences between the egg model and the
corresponding layers of the Earth.
Parts/sub-parts Differences Similarities

IV. Application:
Devise an alternative analogy for the internal structure of the Earth. In a small group, you will
discuss the limitations and strengths of each of these and write your observations.
