Carl wakes up to get ready for school, as his dad, Mac Brashear, a sharecropper that is working with Mules, talks to Carl about how he wants Carl to not end up like him, he wanted him to be a successful man. A time skip occurs to when Carl is an adult, his mom calls him to go to the bus, where he would be taken to the Navy, they have a heartfelt moment just before he leaves. Carl and other black people are in a kitchen cooking for the white Navy workers, as Carl sees them jumping in the sea to swim, carl gets an idea and jumps in as well, the Chief orders someone to get Carl, as he looks like he’s the fastest swimmer there. After so, Carl is shown on a cell, where a chief says that he should be a swimmer on the Navy, where a helicopter breaks down, and Sunday rescues the pilot from the water, but he’s already dead, when the second diver falls from a platform and is drowning, Sunday jumps in and rescues him. Fast forward to Chief Sunday in the Hospital, where the doctor tells him that if he goes diving again, he’ll die, Sunday gets mad and starts rampaging, then people halt him, then Sunday is with the council, where they tell him that he will be reassigned for a training position, where Carl is going to be in. Carl waits for Sunday to let him in, in nighttime, Sunday sprays Carl with water for training, and on morning, he trains everyone and gives exams.

The movie came out in the year 2000 As a new day dawns, Carl decides to walk around town, where he gets flowers and goes to the library, where he meets Jo, where she is studying for medicine, he asks her if he could help her study, but she says no, he leaves flowers around and starts studying, Jo walks to him and then helps him study. They study for days, as time passes, and the divers has a test where they must patch a hole on a boat and fill it with air, the boat starts rolling off a ledge and Douglas’ air hose gets stuck, Carl goes down and saves him, but Rourke leaves because he was scared. They appear on land, as Master Chief gives a medal to Rourke for saving Douglas, even though the one who saved him was Carl. He calls his parents, as his mother has bad news for him, his father had passed away, Carl starts crying, as it gets to nighttime, he’s looking out to sea, after so, he calls Jo, and tells her to go where he is, as a car pulls over next to him, with Gwen Sunday, the wife of Billy Sunday, which is upset because her husband is drinking in their anniversary, she talks with Carl, convinces him to challenge the Master Chief and walks with him inside the bar. Sunday talks trash about Carl, and he challenges Sunday, where they must hold their breaths for as long as possible, and if Carl wins, Snowhill comes back in diving, but if Sunday wins, Carl will have to leave. Jo arrives when the challenge starts. Brashear wins, and a car crash is heard outside, Gwen had crashed her car because she was upset, as Carl talks to Jo, which she says that she’s going to move out to Bellevue, she gets on a taxi to leave as Carl runs after the taxi and asks Jo to marry him, she gets out of the taxi and hugs him. Sunday has a conversation with Mr. Pappy, his superior about Carl, and Pappy doesn’t want Carl to pass, and Sunday tells Carl what he said, and for him to not come to the final exam the next day. Carl goes anyways, as the exam is to go underwater, locate and assemble a flange, the divers go down and locate their work light, and then locate their project. The divers request their toolbags, but a worker breaks Carl’s toolbag to make him fail, several divers finish while Carl still works on it, Jo goes to the Dive station, and Pappy tells Sunday to leave him die down at the sea, but Sunday tells the sailors to pull him up. Carl finishes the project and passes. Mr. Pappy ships Sunday out and fired. A timeskip to a New Year’s party where Jo tells Carl that she’s pregnant, and Billy picks a fight with the diver that he saved at the start of the movie. Carl now is in a mission where he must get a bomb before the Soviets get it, a soviet submarine comes, and Carl’s rope gets hit my it, he survives and locates the bomb. The sailors pull up the bomb, but the cable breaks and Brashear pushes two people to the side, saving them, but the cost being his own left leg, he faints and wakes up in the hospital. He wants his leg to be amputated and that he could go back on duty. He starts training and then he sees Chief Sunday, and they talk about how Brashear will be put on retirement. Sunday talks with the council to give Brashear time to train, and they agree, and Billy trains Carl over the course of 4 weeks. They go to court where Brashear must use the diver suit and take 12 steps forward unassisted, Sunday comes in and gives Carl a motivational speech. Carl takes the 12 steps and goes back on duty with everyone happy for him for going back on duty as the world’s first ever black man to be a diver.
